"Nanitic" is the first chapter of the third Drosophelia release-trilogy.

In typical Drosophelia-fashion, the EP fuses electronic instruments, custom written audio processing software and acoustic elements to create an immersive atmosphere driven by mood rather than a specific style.

As the first entry of the trilogy, the EP sets the stage for musical exploration as it navigates different sonic landscapes, emotion and artistic expression, to be expanded upon in the future chapters.

Having been without the sonic nor lyrical inspiration to finish the "proper songs" that are in the pipeline, I decided to spend a day off with the assignment to "create a short groove in 7/8-time using the Byzantine (double harmonic major)-scale and its derived chords". It's abrupt as it's the result of a "see how far you can get"-exercise, the resulting 100 seconds have been written, recorded and mixed in one go in roughly six hours.

Instruments of interest evident on this recording:

The pad-like opening motif, as well as the muted trumpet-like screeches, stem from the processed signal of a Piggy synth by Tasty Chips Electronics. It has a very tweakable envelope section.

Apart from the percussion all sounds evident on this recording stem from a Piggy, an Arduino-driven monophonic synthesizer by Tasty Chips Electronics.

Apart from the occasional use of overdrive and delay, all sounds were recorded dry, showcasing the ADSR envelopes, FM and filter of the Piggy.

There are 11 Piggy tracks, where four are harmonizing with eachother.

Postscript

Revolving around a percussive pattern and bass riff created by the Ploytec Pi Lambda squared (PL2) synthesizer, this track is an exercise in blending early nineties computer sounds, modular synthesis and stuttering beats into an overall sci-fi feel.

Based on a forgotten guitar riff used years ago in a poorly recorded song. Ditched the original "drum 'n bass metal"-vibe and extended the composition into a suitably mad sci-fi "robot voodoo".

Aural weaponry evident on this recording: Ploytec PL-2, Electro-Harmonix Super Ego combined with NI Reaktor 6. Recorded and produced in Bitwig Studio 2.

..."preached at the altar of decay", of course. This can be described as pastiche for those of an industrial metal-bent. Guitars are down-tuned to B for a typical grinding flavour.

Further sonic manglings are catered for by the Elektron SID station and bass guitar thumping. A quick burst of energy-type-of-tune.

Acoustic guitars blend with chiptune synthesis to create a pallette that balances between bossa nova plucking and squelchy synth leads.

The chiptune aspects were created on a Nintendo Game Boy (1st generation color version) using LSDj for programming the tracker and a 2nd generation Commodore 64 (with 8580 SID chip) using Prophet64 for sequencing.

The latter part of the composition has also been used as the soundtrack for a shoot 'em up.

UT2600 is a reinterpretation of Epic Games' Unreal Tournament for Atari 2600/VCS.

Where the soundtrack for UT2600 consists of original music, as an ode to the original, the ambient drum 'n bass track known as "Foregone Destruction" has been reinterpreted for the Atari's limited TIA chip.

Demo of the capabilities of VSTSID, a free VST instrument that acts as a caricature of the Commodore 64's SID chip. All sounds apart from the drums were created by separate VSTSID instances. The song in question is the title music of Capcom's "Commando", composed by Rob Hubbard.

Antegods - Gault

A short sci-fi esque "Hero vs. Villain"-theme executed in the chiptune realm with all sounds stemming from the 80's videogame era, featuring heavy pulse width modulation and rapidly arpeggiated chords.

The name being a pun on the late English psychedelic songsmith, of course.

All sounds (bar the kick drums) were created by an Elektron SID Station played via MIDI guitar, creating a denser mix by layering more SID channels than the actual chip could provide to a C64 soundtrack.

The bass line is a legato monophonic patch, while the string style sounds are the SIDs pulse modulated waveforms with three voice polyphony (which alone is the maximum for the chip).

I mainly write and release music under the name Drosophelia but will occasionally stray to other territories. My compositions usually blend acoustic and electronic instruments ranging from the traditional to more esoteric gizmos, using hand written software processors and algorithms which are also freely available for others on my website.
