The kick cuts through the trees like a scythe, calling out to her, drawing her closer. It comes from every direction, the purr of the bass slipping through the forest like low-hanging mist.

The primal, metronomic pressure of the beat enmeshes with his lycanthropic howl. The sound is everywhere, and impossible to get a fix on. It rains down from on high, sticking her cloak to her skin and slicking his fur. It rises from the earth, seeping between her toes.

Within this secret glade they meet, alone except for the rotting leaves and creeping moss. Here they become one, disparate egos dissolved in a cocktail of chemical impulses, dopamine responses and the instinctive urgency of the sound that surrounds and consumes them.

On the second single on his Disco Inferno label, I Hate Models exudes the mysterious, ancient power of the werewolf, and invites you to join him in one last dance.

Amelie Lens' trailblazing brand EXHALE presents the label's fourth compilation, introducing a new wave of stand-out techno producers to the label. The EXHALE label and party series have skyrocketed over recent years, hosting only the best in fresh new talent and pioneering producers. 

Kickstarting the compilation is resident AIROD with the raucous track 'Nemesis': straight drum arrangements and frantic claps are accompanied by spiking synths that haunt this track, with a dark and booming breakdown injecting even more ferocity midway. Following is Joey Risdon with 'LSD Reaction', a fast-paced, gritty techno stomper with industrial elements, while Vizionn takes us on a futuristic journey with robotic vocals and high-energy keys in 'Future Energy'. Tigerhead hits us with the celestial and booming 'Looking Glass', keeping the pace up with a rolling cut, while The Blackmailer follows with 'The Queen Has Arrived' - giving a nod to rap royalty with this twisted techno hit featuring a sinister, electrifying riff. 

Exhale resident Farrago teams up with Part Time Killer for 'The Keymaster‘, a strong, driving track with electric atmospherics and a slick, hypnotizing sample. Rudosa & Blicz's synergy as producers is felt with beautiful composition 'Split Your Love', a change of pace with a sharp, euphoric melody. ACOR comes next with 'Eat Sleep Rave Repeat', the perfect peak-time warehouse energy booster, with the title commanding listeners throughout. Flour takes charge with 'Invasion', easing into proceedings with an ethereal bleating choir, before racing synths take over and turn this into a vigorous weapon. Caravel drives on with 'Echoes Of You', keeping up the momentum with a frantic kick & hi-hat combo laced with yearning cries throughout. 

On the flip is DLV with 'Der Pakt', a heaving cut armed with an insidious synth-line made for epic peak-time moments on the dance floor. Nineted scales back with 'Euphoric Expression', initially presenting arcade-like melodies before throwing in twinkling keys and a ferocious kick drum. Next, Carla Schmitt dives back in with her contribution 'Red Ambition', firing fiendish and growling elements over the booming bass and rhythmic kick to create a mischievous energy. Chemtrailz is up next with 'The Future Is Matriarchy', a trancey expedition with enticing vocals and high-pitched strikes. Rounding off is WarinD with 'Techno Memories', a heaving yet grooving track with a deep, dark techno synth that wavers throughout.

This three track EP on Hotflush Recordings showcases Caldellas' extensive capabilities as a producer, with a variation of styles present throughout. From the vocal refrains of 'Burn The Past’ via ‘Metropolis’s electro flirtation to the stadium- sized 'May Day', Caldellas flexes a sure-footed range that hints at what’s to come. A new year means new musical horizons here at the Bordello. Curses formed his sound in the distortion and sweat of back alley dive bar bars amidst the crash of guitars and the audible gulp of beer. Hints of disco and wave balance this rougher edge, smoothing down those creased lines for a style that adheres to no boundaries. “Pedal To The Metal And Don’t Look Back” is a perfect introduction to Curses’ multifaceted sound. Beats orbit burbling bass and brash strings in a work of dreamy hypnotics. “Knife in Teeth” comes from a similarly shadowy lair. Dark bars are further inked by industrial percussion in a track born on the factory floor to strict EBM parents. Terr takes on “Pedal To The Metal And Don’t Look Back” and does the original proud. Bass rumbles to the tune of a guttering engine before lighter notes take hold. Murky currents are cleared by bright synth blasts in this uplifting remake. The Bird of Paradise closes the EP with his psychedelic take on “Knife in Teeth.” Drums take on a more sinister tone as tribal rhythms give rise to jungle imagery and the immediate threat of what might lurk behind those supposedly innocent sounds.

Night had fallen on the city and throughout the streets swarms of people headed out to dance the night away. On every corner basements became hives of activity, spaces where free spirited animals could lose their inhibitions together. Sweat dripped from the basement walls, the air dense with heat from the bodies that writhed across the floor. You could hardly breathe amidst the thick smoke that hid the faces of the nocturnal dancers. The real movers and the shakers would stay until dawn, before the debaucherous cycle would begin again.

Cologne-native Christian S. lands on Permanent Vacation for his next EP Tannin. Following his releases on Comeme, the crew he is also part of, this release features four tracks, each equally wonderful in its own way. Our pick which features Matias Aguayo, is a buoyant house jam smattered with crisp hi-hats and reverberating synths.
