Your Questions, Answered

Editors Steven Rothman and Nicholas Utechin join us for a chat about a book they have co-edited: To Keep the Memory Green, some recollections from the life of Sherlockian/Doylean scholar and collector Richard Lancelyn Green. We also hear about their respective experiences as editors of the Baker Street Journal and the Sherlock Holmes Journal and the formation of the Quartering Press.

Episode 8: To Keep the Memory Green

We're pleased to welcome two noted authors to the show this week: Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower. The recently edited a biography about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle along with Doyle's great-nephew Charles Foley. Comprised of hundreds and hundreds of letters, the book is already a critical success and is gaining popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. We talk with Jon and Dan to get some of the behind-the-scenes information from them.

Episode 13: Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life

As you probably know, any blockbuster film - in addition to the revenue it brings to the studio - will result in an associated cottage industry. Toys, music, books, video games - you name it. In this case, Sherlockians new and old have been given a gift in the renaissance the character is now enjoying.

In this episode, we're joined by Steven Doyle, BSI, 2s ("The Western Morning News"), author of Sherlock Holmes For Dummies, a book that in a single place, encapsulates our hobby and all of the associated background of the time, era and stories that make it so enjoyable. Join us and listen in on what some of the highlights of the book are, the "story behind the story" of how Steve was chosen as the author, and some surprises that Steve encountered along the way.

Episode 25: Sherlock Holmes for Dummies

We enjoy the episodes in which we have an opportunity to interview interesting people in the world of Sherlock Holmes. Even more so when we can welcome back a previous guest. In this case, we're happy to have Jon Lellenberg join us to talk about his new novel Baker Street Irregular. Jon previously joined us on Episode 13: A Life in Letters with Dan Stashower. Episode 29: Baker Street Irregular

It's always fun to have an author on our show, and even more so when the author has written a book that has gotten many popular reviews lately. Graham Moore was inspired to write The Sherlockianafter discovering the character in his childhood and discovering that the people who admire him are an interesting lot.

Episode 30: The Sherlockian

It's easy to assume that Sherlock Holmes's powers were something of an anomaly - that Holmes was a superhero with something akin to super powers, and we mere mortals cannot attain the same level of expertise and professionalism. But that assumption would be wrong, as author Maria Konnikova has made abundantly clear.

In her book Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes, Konnikova, who holds a doctorate in psychology from Columbia University and writes the "Literally Psyched" column for Scientific American, deconstructs the process of observation, deduction and self-knowledge. In doing so, she gives the reader concrete examples of how to approach the fabled scientific method, along with the psychology behind the process.

While we have previously reviewed her book, our conversation with Maria in this episode took personal turns and got us much deeper into the creative process, her inspiration, and even a back story to Holmes that gave him these powers.

In addition, we covered topics from the ridiculous to the sublime such as movie trailers and voice overs, storytelling, suggestions for getting your fix of Sherlock Holmes news links and more. We also discussed the need to merge this site and the Baker Street Blog and put out a call for assistance from those with technical programming aptitude to help us with the migration and site upgrade. We also asked for feedback on our process, frequency and topics of the show - we'd love to hear from you!

Finally, we concluded with a reading of the Editor's Gas-Lamp, this time choosing the most recent entry from the Summer 2013 (Vol. 63, No. 2).

The Administrative Side of Baker Street

"the smartest of the Scotland Yarders" [STUD]&nbsp; When you think of a Scotland Yard inspector in the Sherlock Holmes stories, odds are your thoughts immediately go to Inspector Lestrade. He makes the most appearances in stories and certainly gets the most name recognition, in part thanks to Dennis Hoey's portrayal of the bumbling but capable policeman. &nbsp; But what about good old Inspector Gregson, who appeared alongside Lestrade in the very first Sherlock Holmes story? He manages to make a number of appearances, but doesn't rise to the same level of household awareness. Where Are They Now? Inspector Gregson

Sherlock Holmes's Underground Network
