"It is with a heavy heart" [FINA]

The worlds of Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle enthusiasts have lost a giant. Jon Lellenberg, invested in the Baker Street Irregulars as "Rodger Prescott of Evil Memory" in 1974, passed away on April 24, 2021 after a short illness. 

Jon's contribution to our hobby was almost too immense for words. He was a confidant and representative of the Conan Doyle Estate for many years, extending back to a close relationship with Dame Jean Conan Doyle. As an author and editor, he contributed to a number of books on Conan Doyle's life, including A Life in Letters and Dangerous Work, both co-edited with Dan Stashower, BSI ("Thurston"). 

Jon's knowledge of early Irregularity and the times in which those Irregulars lived and worked was unrivaled, which made him the perfect person to tackle the BSI Archival History Series. During that time, he was known as the Thucydides of the Baker Street Irregulars. 

With four appearances on I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere, Jon gave us so much material with which to work, so we pulled some clips from previous episodes to pepper our memories of him. If you have memories, please share them in a comment below and see the links for more information.

The Baker Street Almanac

“a ramble through the Ragged Shaw” [PRIO] 
As the curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries, Tim Johnson has seen just about everything. Almost as much as John Bennett Shaw saw. When he was putting on his conferences and chatting with the various attendees, Shaw noticed something: there wasn't a definitive list of what every Sherlockian Library should have.

Based on his observations, wide network, and endless library, Shaw developed a list of some 100 books, periodicals, and other material with which every Sherlock Holmes enthusiast should be familiar. This became known as The Shaw 100. Over time, items were added and others deleted. 

We talk with Tim about how the collection and the list came to be, what significant changes occurred, and what a Shaw 100 list of 2021 might look like. Can you guess what might be on it?

The Shaw 100

As regular listeners know, Michael F. Whelan, BSI ("Wiggins") passed away in October of 2021. His contribution to the Sherlockian game was more than any one person could adequately describe. 

To honor his memory, we gathered a number of Baker Street Irregulars to remember Mike beyond his Sherlockian self — people who knew him well and could comment on his interests, his personality, and his character. These were: Peter Blau, Ross Davies, Steven Doyle, Les Klinger, Hartley Nathan, Otto Penzler, and Steve Rothman.

It's always fun to have an author on our show, and even more so when the author has written a book that has gotten many popular reviews lately. Graham Moore was inspired to write The Sherlockianafter discovering the character in his childhood and discovering that the people who admire him are an interesting lot.

Episode 30: The Sherlockian

As you probably already know, Edward Hardwicke passed away in May 2011. To an entire generation of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts, he was Dr. Watson, the faithful friend, biographer and colleague of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes.

In this episode, we gather with two eminent Sherlockians who knew Mr. Hardwicke and explore his life and commitment to the craft a little deeper. We're joined by David Stuart Davies, BSI ("Sir Ralph Musgrave"), author of The Tangled Skein, Bending the Willow: Jeremy Brett As Sherlock Holmes and Starring Sherlock Holmes: A Century of the Master Detective on Screen, among many other titles. We were also fortunate to have Steven Doyle, BSI ("The Western Morning News"), author of Sherlock Holmes For Dummies, proprietor of the Wessex Press (sponsor), and organizer of the quadrennial conference From Gillette to Brett, which covers Holmes on the stage and screen.

To Burt and Scott she will always be the guest. While you may have heard her mentioned by the name of Irene Adler, she is actually Lara Pulver and she is our interview subject for this very special episode of I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere.

Sherlock: Season Two originally aired on BBC One in January and now we're poised for it to air on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery in the United States. One of the most intriguing characters of this new series is none other than the adventuress Irene Adler, the antagonist in the first episode "A Scandal in Belgravia."

Episode 41: The Woman

A new modern urban re-interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. That's how the digital comic Watson and Holmes is being referred to.

The recent revival in Sherlock Holmes material across a variety of media has truly increased the buzz around our favorite topic. From the reimagining on the big screen, courtesy of the Robert Downey, Jr. / Jude Law films, to the small screen updating of the characters in Sherlock, through Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman and soon the Jonny Lee Miller / Lucy Liu version in Elementary, there is plenty of interest in the perennial character.

Now, we're prepared to be treated to yet another version of the iconic detective and his faithful friend and colleague, thanks to New Paradigm Studios. In this episode, we're joined by three of the principals who are behind the updating of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson the a modern urban setting of New York and as African American characters. Brandon Perlow, Publisher and co-creator of Watson and Holmes, Justin Gabrie, Senior Editor, and Karl Bollers, Writer joined us to tell the story behind their work with Paul J Mendoza, Co-creator and color artist and Rick Leonardi, Penciler - who has worked on a number of Marvel and DC Comics projects.

Episode 44: Watson and Holmes

Joining the BBC's Sherlock on television this fall is another high-powered outing by the network CBS in the United States. If you haven't yet heard, the new show is Elementary and it stars Jonny Lee Miller as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes who is in New York after rehab, and Lucy Liu at Dr. Joan Watson, Holmes's "sober companion," whose responsibility it is to look after him an ensure he readjusts to society and doesn't relapse.

The creators were under pressure almost from the moment the project was announced, what with the success of another modern-day Sherlock Holmes enjoying popular acclaim. Rest assured, Elementary does not encroach on the territory of Sherlock.

But exactly how much of the Canon does it include or reference? And how faithful are the characters to what we know? Or does that even matter? And how closely tread is the fine line that exists between an established character and updating it to a modern setting? Join us as we debate and discuss the relative merits and attributes of the latest addition of Holmes to the small screen.

During the episode, we share some listener comments of late, read the Editor's Gas-Lamp from Vol. 6, No. 1 (March 1956) from the Baker Street Journal, and prepare for our Halloween Show. Episode 46: Elementary, My Dear CBS

With Victorian and Gothic influence in a number of the Sherlock Holmes stories, the Canon can be great fodder for the mysterious, occult and spooky elements of Halloween. Certainly The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot," "The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier," or "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place" have elements that can make a reader's hair stand on end.

But the most direct link with Halloween as we know it today (other than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot No. 249" - the original mummy story) has to be "The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire." Sherlock Holmes himself was a bit dismissive of the supernatural in this case, saying "Rubbish, Watson, rubbish! What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in their grave by stakes driven through their hearts? It's pure lunacy."

But our guest on this episode, Les Klinger (a guest on Episodes 31 and 32, when he spoke about the Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey, Jr. movies and his role as Warner Brothers' consultant on the set) is no stranger to Dracula. He has written The New Annotated Dracula and has been an influential in the Dracularian movement. As we discuss the intersection of Holmes and Dracula, Les helps us understand the evolution of vampire literature and Dracula-influenced media.

In the discussion, Les alludes to other influential fictional works in the movement such as I Am Legend, In the Shadow of Dracula, and Anno Dracula by Kim Newman, who is the Distinguished Speaker at the 2013 Baker Street Irregulars Weekend. In addition to the popular work, Les noted that there is a scholarly vein of work (pardon the pun) in the field that brings more seriousness to the practice, albeit less fluid and constant than Sherlockian scholarship. But we kept coming back to the intersections of Holmes and Dracula, in all forms: written, film and stage, and how each have their cycles of popularity that are typically driven by a single piece of work each time.

We look at Morley's early life, his influences, his literary works, and his popularity leading up to and through the time of the establishment of Sherlockian societies.

Joel Emery is writer and co-creator of Sherlock & Co., a new podcast from Goalhanger Podcasts. Together with his partner Adam Jarrell, they're dramatizing the entire canon of 60 stories in the form of a real-crime podcast, with John H. Watson as the narrator. 

It's an ambitious and creative endeavor, and we talked to Joel about his inspirations, the creative process, partnering with a podcast juggernaut, working with a cast on the other side of the globe, the sound design, writing for Watson as an audio everyman, the most challenging story to write, Joel's favorite, and much more.

Sherlock Holmes and the Empire Builders

“a wistful look on his wrinkled face” [BLAN]&nbsp;  The first Sherlock Holmes adventure authored by Sherlock Holmes was “The Blanched Soldier.” It tells the tale of a family’s attempt to protect their son, a friend’s dedication to determining the truth, and Holmes’s actions to explain everything. Ira Matetsky, BSI ("The Final Problem") edited this volume and in the process, assembled a group of Sherlockians who have unique talents to apply to the analysis of the story and the manuscript, which was generously made available from the Berg Collection at the New York Public Library. That Ghastly Face

“the high opinion formed of him by his contemporaries.” [VALL]   When the first Sherlock Holmes short stories came on the scene, they were something of a novelty: non-serialized, self-contained tales that put the Strand Magazine on the map. As with any success story, this one inspired imitators. These contemporaries of Sherlock Holmes inhabited the pages of the Strand and many other magazines of the day. Author Michael Cohen has stepped forward to catalog and categorize them from the years 1891 to 1914. This surprising array of characters includes those who were consciously not trying to be Sherlock Holmes, ranging from the occult to females, bumbling detectives, doctors and scientists, the criminal class and more. In , Cohen gives us a handy and valuable resource; its subtitle indicates it is a Mystery Guide and Finding List. For readers interested in detectives in this golden era, this book is an essential companion to help identify and locate these sometimes famous, sometimes obscure detectives. The Golden Era of Sherlock Holmes an His Contemporaries

“able to evolve from their own inner consciousness” [STUD]&nbsp;   &nbsp;  Now in its 12th year, 221B Con has become a mainstay of annual Sherlockian events, drawing people from all over the world to Atlanta every April. It was founded as a response to Sherlock on BBC, but has expanded beyond that to include the original stories as well as all forms of media. Last year, the founders announced that this year would be the final 221B Con. As we narrow in on that date, regular attendee and volunteer Johanna Draper Carlson isn't convinced that has to be the case. But the future isn't quite clear at this point. There are gatherings happening every week, in person and virtually, of Sherlockian societies. And just like the Sherlockian societies that sprouted up in those early years of the hobby, Steve Doyle, BSI ("The Western Morning News") thought it might be helpful to bring some of them together in a spirit of building Sherlockian community and creating connections. The Sherlock Holmes Pub

Curtis Armstrong, BSI ("An Actor, and a Rare One") is known by many names. Miles Dalby, Charles De Mar, Herbert Viola, Scooter, Metatron, and of course, Booger. But around these parts, he is known as a keen Sherlockian who has been part of our little corner of the universe since his grade school days. His memoir Revenge of the Nerd: Or...the Singular Adventures of the Man Who Would Be Booger tells a series of tales that will be of interest to those who only know him through his remarkable career in show business. But we wanted to get behind all of that and delve into the intersection with his many other interests, such as Sherlock Holmes and P.G. Wodehouse, among others. From Detroit to Geneva and back again, from the stage to the big screen and small screen, we explore the intricacies of nerd culture — particularly when it comes to the Victorian misfit Sherlock Holmes. Early influences of Curtis still have an impact today, and he leaves us with lessons that should have every Sherlockian embracing their inner nerd.

Anyone who is interested in the intersection of Sherlock Holmes and audio (that's why you're here, isn't it?) is familiar with the name Clive Merrison. 

The definitive Sherlock Holmes of the audio realm, Clive Merrison holds the distinction of being the only actor to play Sherlock Holmes in dramatized form in every one of the 60 stories from the Canon, as well as in 15 additional pastiches. Together with Michael Williams (and later Andrew Sachs), Merrison brought Holmes to life and gave him real humanity—particularly in the sometimes prickly, sometimes tender friendship with his Watson. 

We talked with Clive Merrison about his real-life friendship with Michael Williams, his time on the stage, what his Uncle Norman did to influence him, his adventures with "Hobbo," the actor he would sneak into the sound booth to watch perform and the actor from whom he wished he could flee from the recording studio, what made Sir Laurence Olivier hug him, the Sherlock role he turned down, the next Sherlock Holmes story he'd like to perform in, and much more.
