“I have all the facts in my journal” [STUD]&nbsp;  For our 221st episode, we had to make it as deeply Sherlockian as we could. What better topic than The Baker Street Journal, the first (ir)regular publication about Sherlock Holmes scholarship? First published in 1946, the BSJ is a stalwart in the Sherlockian community, and it's much more than scholarship. Steven Rothman, BSI, 2s. ("The Valley of Fear") has edited the Journal since 2000, and he'll be the first to admit it's much more than scholarship. On the occasion of the BSJ's 75th anniversary, we discuss the origins of this little yellow-backed publication, its evolution, and where it's headed. Steve's enthusiasm for the topic knows no bounds. “all gossip upon the matter” [BERY]&nbsp;  If there is one name that is synonymous with the Sherlockian hobby, it is Peter Blau, BSI, 2s. ("Black Peter"). And if there is one publication that is eagerly anticipated every month, it is his longstanding newsletter "Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press." As "Cartwright" of the Baker Street Irregulars, Peter goes more places, sees more things, and overhears more than just about anyone in the Sherlockian world. So much so that it has often been said that if Peter doesn't know about it, it's not happening. Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press

“a ramble through the Ragged Shaw” [PRIO] 
As the curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota Libraries, Tim Johnson has seen just about everything. Almost as much as John Bennett Shaw saw. When he was putting on his conferences and chatting with the various attendees, Shaw noticed something: there wasn't a definitive list of what every Sherlockian Library should have.

Based on his observations, wide network, and endless library, Shaw developed a list of some 100 books, periodicals, and other material with which every Sherlock Holmes enthusiast should be familiar. This became known as The Shaw 100. Over time, items were added and others deleted. 

We talk with Tim about how the collection and the list came to be, what significant changes occurred, and what a Shaw 100 list of 2021 might look like. Can you guess what might be on it?

The Shaw 100

As you probably know, any blockbuster film - in addition to the revenue it brings to the studio - will result in an associated cottage industry. Toys, music, books, video games - you name it. In this case, Sherlockians new and old have been given a gift in the renaissance the character is now enjoying.

In this episode, we're joined by Steven Doyle, BSI, 2s ("The Western Morning News"), author of Sherlock Holmes For Dummies, a book that in a single place, encapsulates our hobby and all of the associated background of the time, era and stories that make it so enjoyable. Join us and listen in on what some of the highlights of the book are, the "story behind the story" of how Steve was chosen as the author, and some surprises that Steve encountered along the way.

As we continue our look at some of the early Baker Street Irregulars associated with The Baker Street Journal (we began with its publisher Ben Abramson in Episode 269), we turn to Christopher Morley. 

Morley was the right man at the right time with the right attitude, and Steven Rothman, BSI, 2s. ("The Valley of Fear") is the foremost expert on this legend of the BSJ. We look at Morley's early life, his influences, his literary works, and his popularity leading up to and through the time of the establishment of Sherlockian societies.

Legends of the BSJ - Christopher Morley

When Sherlockians are looking for more ways to fill their listening and viewing time, what are they to do? We would of course recommend you to either of the podcasts we create, but lucky for you, there's an even better option! 

Sherlock Mondays are offered through the Rosenbach Museum and Library, running from September 2023 to April 2024. These Biblioventures are the creation of Edward G. Pettit, who is the Sunstein Senior Manager of Public Programs at the Rosenbach. 

For 30 weeks, Ed and his co-hosts take us through more than half of the Sherlock Holmes stories, complete with commentary and cocktails, among other things. Ed takes us behind the scenes to understand how this series was developed and what to expect next.
