melt mix vol. 52 - Willee

Hassan Abou Alam is one of Egypt’s musical exports, steadily publishing his work since 2008 on diverse labels such as Casa Voyager and Naive. More recently, he featured on Violet’s Naivety label; his EP "T44"climbed BandCamp’s best selling list just a few days after the release.

The past six years, Hassan has been playing around with his gear, forging multiple live performances. A hard to pin down sound that utilizes analog and digital instruments, a form of organized chaos that he portrays with extreme finesse—his Boiler Room set last year is testament to his genre bending capabilities. Through Red Bull’s RBMA Abou Alam was given a chance to mingle musically with the ancient people of Luxor. The result? A phenomenal live performance in Cairo two years ago fusing traditional folklore with electronica, successfully pinning him as one of Egypt’s most versatile musicians.

His sound as a DJ is constantly evolving, springing to life through the crevices of house, breaks, noise, bass, grime, techno and more.

Hypnotic Groove Mix #370 - Hassan Abou Alam

Our final premiere of the week comes from Minneapolis based techno producer Lonefront, who’s supplied a deep and hypnotic techno cut, perfect for murky basement clubs.

An artist out of Minneapolis by way of the Bay Area, Lonefront produces explorative techno cuts as well as his performances as a live modular act, appearing on bills alongside DVS1, Volvox and Planetary Assault Systems. Now, the Minnesotan producer brings his dynamic take on the genre to Kajunga Records with two tracks pressed on wax across ‘Additive Spectra / South Of Forever’.

Lead track ‘Additive Spectra’ is a loopy affair awash with alarming bleeps, moody low-ends and sharp percussion, before B2’s ‘South Of Forever’ provides a twisted, eerie soundscape as shadowy synths churn throughout this slice of modular grooves.

‘South Forever’ is deep and grimy, reminiscent of the classic Klockworks releases and cathartic dances at Berghain. Trippy melodies play off misty atmospheres, causing chilling and fine-drawn tension. This is modern day minimalism at its finest.
