I had a reputation of being very energetic, bubbly, optimistic, and charismatic in college. I was very active, and was a friendly face that could be spotted all over campus. There was this one girl who went up to my girlfriend, and was like, "So, does Conor ever settle down?" When my girlfriend told me she was asked this, I asked her what she said. She told her that "of course he does, he calms down." I responded, "Well damn! Now I have to kill her! You gave away my secret!"

My vocal coach was aware of reputation and wanted a darker side of Conor Walsh to come out. She encouraged me to show some of that darkness off in my voice and music. I hated it. I didn't want to show any of that. I was very much one who swallowed their emotions and bottled things up. I told her, "you wouldn't wonder why if you could see me through my eyes."

You see, people knew me as Conor Walsh, this character of sorts, but few people knew me as Conor. It was a kind of pressure I created and tried desperately to uphold. I wanted to be known and liked. I wanted to be needed and called upon. I had a Superman-complex where I wanted to be everything for everyone, and I pushed myself very hard. With that, I did carry many insecurities and self-doubt. I only felt worthy of love if I had something to offer. During a time where all was going pretty well, I was also very insecure, and I was pushing myself towards a burnout. If the pandemic didn't happen, I was going to crash and burn sooner rather than later.

As for the production of this song, I turned to my friend Ben Grant. He put out a phenomenal album called A to Z and I adored the sound and vibe he created. I knew that I wanted that kind of vibe on "My Eyes." I accepted that I couldn't create the sound on my own, and I knew I wanted to work with him. I love how he brought this song to life. Through the process, I'd say we became even closer friends.

This song was also co-written by the very talented Isaiah Jet Vallejos, my college roommate and gifted rapper. I approached him about this song, and we ended up writing it together at the kitchen table. It was one of those special moments of being musicians and collaborating in an intimate setting that can't be beat.
