Monolith was born into an imaginative landscape of relationality. The story, in its splendid form, is rooted in a fragmented gaze at the monolithic entity.

At its core, the monolith is a symbol of uniformity and stability. We see it, on the other hand, as a seamless blending of countless pieces, pieces from an all-encompassing past, present, and future. Be it our culture, our music, or our shared mythos. So we took the story of our imagined monolith within an eternally recurrent setting and told its story in a musical yet visceral form. Filling the space with its solid existence, the monolith became both the storyteller and the protagonist in this story. 

A fragmented soundscape is a recurrent theme throughout this album, descriptive of the timelessness and placelessness of our imagined cycle. Unexpected jumps and swinging moods are reminiscent to us of a protagonist’s cathartic ups and downs, and the sharp-edged rhythmic structure is our manifestation that dance is essential to this journey.

With a thrill on such pursuit, every track in this debut album contains a particle to represent the thriving evolution behind it. Who lends an ear to its lands, is free to discover its essence in their own way. After all, the monolith emerges and embraces every other.

Pursuing the goal of "expressing the inexpressible" and constantly developing and enriching its music; Ikaru is an electronica & downtempo band from Turkey. This is a full live show that Ikaru expressed the tastiest outcomes of their journey so far, with a respectful homage to the cultural heritage of their current city, Ankara.

Ankara Castle is one of the oldest sights in the capital city of Turkey. The monument has a history dating back to 2500 years ago and had been a residence to the numerous generations so far. Nowadays, the castle is a visual amalgam of different historical eras that all left their own mark in one way or another. The old Ankara houses that are within the castle’s outer wall are also unique and are composed of wood, mud, brick, and tile. From the castle, the juxtaposition between the old and new Ankara is gaining a new dimension blended with Ikaru’s electronic ambient music. Enjoy this audiovisual story which is full of different musical ideas, profoundly expressed by this quartet in an ice-cold and historical open-air environment, surrounded by the metropolis of Ankara.

Ikaru Live at Ankara Castle

Nara is the story of a transformation.

Initiated based on an improvised acapella melody by Bobby McFerrin, the first seeds of Nara has been planted two years ago. Since that day, the track has experienced numerous metamorphoses. What is absorbed through this process has reflected to Nara, which means “an ecstatic state of exclamation” in Turkish. Nara is a musical representation of this process within a universe of delicately woven soundscapes featuring textured vocals, bowed guitar and  analog synthesizers, based on the downtempo rhythms of Ikaru.

The video, on the other hand, narrates an ever-changing journey of linescapes and symbolist traditions of the world, accompanied by the reaction-diffusion patterns, which manifest themselves in nature by many occasions of chemical reactions, such as in the coat patterns of zebras and giraffes. The video is designed, animated and arranged as an algorithmic & generative visual composition by Ali Bozkurt, and no further editing applied to the output of this composition. The journey is in a complete parametric relationship with music, leaving us in the jungle of both the materialistic and spiritual dynamics of the nature.

Ikaru is a musical duo that was born out of a pure desire of identification with the expanded consciousness of the expressive qualities. 

Originated in Ankara; Ikaru gets its main inspiration from the timeless and placeless resorts of human culture, intertwined both with beats and notes of antiquity as well as the mind-bending bleeps of synth-scapes. Insisting upon a genre-free overall style, the sound of Ikaru resonates within a range of eclectic electronic beats, indigenous instruments, and psychedelic techno, sometimes revisiting a lush ambient style.

In its essence, Ikaru seeks music that is "capable of expressing the inexpressible after silence" in Huxley's words.
