Framework presents the first edition of TOWER Imports, a limited mix series designed to incorporate international artists into New York's TOWER project. 

The inaugural mix comes from experimental Italian musician, DJ, & producer @ikavapii. Exploring abstract and detailed club-adjacent music with releases on @earlyreflex and @pampsychia, the London-based artist driven by a playful approach to sound design and unconventional structures. With this mix, they initiate explorations of waterlogged sonics in preparation for the next edition of TOWER, February 29 at Bossa Nova Civic Club in Brooklyn.

Weirdness and detail. This is all I want as a listener and a dancer, and what I want to convey as Ikävä Pii. In this mix I’ve explored slowfast ambiguity, music for ponds and futuristic punk, pairing Italian Sunitty with warped UK techno, with a couple of WTF turns.

For the most part, it is extremely detailed music. It’s abstract and rich. I don’t like the definition of “sound design” anymore: it sounds “functional”, as if the goal was creating a product. These producers are (like me), instead, trying to spawn detailed worlds.

I’ve started making music with a punk band in Puglia. I picked up a guitar because my father and all his brothers played. Family gatherings were beautifully loud. Puglia was still a poor and tough place when I was a kid, so my love for international music was a form of escapism. I was (like many others) online a lot and in touch with musicians from all over the world. I started dreaming of London listening to The Clash at maybe 12yo? London has truly shaped me, I was radicalised here. Politically and artistically. And here’s where I embraced my queerness.

I think, in many instances, it was here that I was exposed to some really fringe stuff, and that’s how I realised I loved everything that was genuinely weird or boundaries-pushing. Furthermore, I believe that Hackney Wick makes my life as an artist easier. Cheap rent, community and proximity: it’s a 5 mins walk from the warehouse to the studio and the venue, and sometimes special things only happen thanks to the support of other locals. You know who you are! <3

Niche started in April 2023 as a monthly sonic hangout; noisy jams, open decks, and improvised sets. Now it’s a full-scale event, with performances by some of the best artists we know. It started out of necessity: an accessible space to experiment with fellow noisemakers. 
My relationship with the venue was crucial; I’ve been a resident at The Bath House for 2 years now, and Niche can only happen because my studio is there.

It is a lovely ecosystem of musicians, DJs, listeners and dwellers. We are trying to bridge the gap between the bedroom and the venue, offering a space for people to try new things out and take risks, playing for the most understanding audience. In terms of curation, I am looking for the most daring acts out there - no genre limitations, but definitely priority to live shows, and musicians in particular. 
Alongside artists I know and/or follow, we met incredibly talented people through the open calls, or other nice folks who just jumped on the groupchat and asked to play! Keeping it as open and diverse as possible is at the core of our practice. We only have one resident at the moment - the amazing Queenie.

NICHE w/ Ikävä Pii - 17th March 2025

Following the launch of the Eyes series, Early Reflex welcomes back Ikävä Pii for “Eyes II”, the second entry in this exploratory two-tracker format. 

Possibly the darkest tracks Ikävä Pii has produced to date, ‘False Binaries Fight for Primacy’ and ‘Permaweird’ are two detailed and twisted club tunes, encapsulating the perennial state of frustrated urgency of our times. 
Uneasy feelings are conveyed in both tracks, and refracted through the artist’s signature playful approach.
False Binaries Fight for Primacy is driven by the eerie ambiguity of its major/minor harmony, and a relentless rhythmic section that nods to post-punk as much as the track’s distorted, shouty vocals. The unsettling main theme of Permaweird is hinged on an alteration of the Locrian mode (often deemed the “weirdest” mode), and its timbre, albeit recalling familiar patches from the Process Fatigue era, here paints a much darker picture. 
Topical and heartfelt, these tracks update Ikävä Pii’s sound with an uncanny mutation, material for a standout moment in a club set. Already secret weapons in Ikävä Pii’s live show for nearly a year, they’ve left heads spinning on dancefloors in UK, Europe and beyond, and now find their proper home on Early Reflex.

“What’s the purpose of club music in a climate where alienation is the norm and outdated narratives are collapsing?
We live in the permaweird: reality gets increasingly absurd, and yet we adapt to it every day.
Nothing to fight for: digital vs physical, liberal left vs authoritarian right, old vs young - just false binaries. There must be another way. 
In the meantime, activate punk mode, shout in the mic, use stranger scales. 
The only real binary is rich vs non-rich (and that’s what clubs should be about).
