I spent all day re-organising my modular, and realised that the best way was to create a 'side instrument' in the smaller box- which I thought of like a VCS3, with joystick, poorly tracking oscillators and spring reverb, but without the pin matrix.  The idea is to get me out of my comfort zone and force a different workflow.  I used this box to create a tuned-by-ear drone, which I then played hands-on the synth for filter sweeps, levels, and feedback controlling - things I normally automate (I usually patch the modular to play itself as much as possible, and then play other keyboards over it).

This is just a simple ambient solo using the Buchla Music Easel and Christopher H.M Jacques "Sleepwalker" patch for the Zoia. Hopefully it will be of some use to someone for the trio project.

A simple chord sequence courtesy of Tonnetz Sequent, which is split between a chord that has its filter rhythmically opened and a muxlicer arpeggiating through the oscillators. I played with the volume and reverb settings as it ran through for a few minutes. Should be plenty of space for more parts to go over this.

This will be fun! 

I built a patch in kontakt consisting of two voices that seemed to compliment each other and ran a simple midi pattern triggering both. There's a lot of texture and hiss, maybe too much but hopefully others might find some use in this. Feel free to chop, mangle or do what you like with this one, just make sure i get to hear it!

This is the first part of a 3-part collaboration for the Disquiet Junto. All the sounds used in this basic rhythm track (85bpm) are from a recent session where the numerous noises a bass guitar makes were recorded using a contact mic on the body of the bass rather than through the normal pickups.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
