Deep Breakfast 224 ~ James Bernard

Coming February 2nd 2024, "Abundance" is the new album by Phoebe Dubar composed of eight tracks, each offering positive, elevating, shimmering, and textural sonic experiences. The songs incorporate layered vocals, viola, analog and software synths, binaural beats, and unique sound healing instruments. IKSRE (I Keep Seeing Rainbows Everywhere), creates ambient music that teeters on the edge of danceability, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a world of musical abundance.

The creative process began in the previous year when the artist started working on "Dawn in a Foreign City." The album's vision solidified during the transition into NYE 2022/23 when the artist's husband introduced them to Chicane's iconic 2000 album "Behind the Sun," sparking the realization that they wanted to craft an album filled with breezy, sunny sounds. This profound moment was an embodiment of the new moon intention set six months prior, with the full moon materializing the artist's creative aspirations.

With a positive and empowering message at its core, "Abundance" seeks to remind us that the path to a more fulfilling life begins by acknowledging the richness within ourselves.

Wenge, pronounced /wen-gee/, is a legume tree native to the forests of Congo, Zaire, Gabon, Cameroon, and the southern regions of Tanzania and Mozambique. Some of its indigenous names are dikela, mibotu, bokonge, and awong. It is a hard and heavy dark-colored wood used for musical instruments, like guitars, flutes, drums and balaphones, which we play on the recordings. The name struck us as an apt metaphor for resiliency, stability, durability, and the sonic resonance we bring you on this release.

Wenge is a collaborative recording inspired by music score created for the Raphael Sbarge-directed PBS series 10 Days in Watts.

Through adversity, we find strength. This year was not without its challenges but it was without a doubt the most wonderful opportunity for growth I have ever had the good fortune to experience. Life is a gift and the human connections we make every day are all that will matter in the end. 

This set for me is a celebration of life and newfound inspiration, I sincerely hope you find joy in listening to it. Thank you to all of the incredible artists who continue to inspire me every day. As Matthew Caws said "the weight is a gift".

I Just Don't Believe You

Nerves / Familiarity is the first official start to Elskavon’s next album era, and it’s a representation not only of composer Chris Bartels’ sound over the years, but also a metaphorical look inside his mind. That is, one of contrast.

With Elskavon’s sound, there’s always been a contrast, and marriage, of grandeur and intimacy. Nerves / Familiarity is no exception.

While it starts out quiet, the listener can immediately feel the enormity of Nerves. The sustained sound is that of Bartels slowly drawing a string of yarn across his old spinet piano’s strings. Only a minute and half in, the sound is thick and full, layered with falsetto vocals fed through modular synthesizers. It hasn’t taken long to be engulfed in the grandeur. 

However, as quickly as it arrives, there’s a departure. An intimate and rhythmic cassette texture, signaled by a slow tonic modulation, foreshadows a look at the second track - the contrast.

Familiarity begins with a bed of introspective notes and textures - mostly that of high piano notes and chopped up Rhodes improvisations. There’s a certain closeness with this sound, and a contrast to the large reverb-soaked fabric that leads Nerves. Then halfway through the song, there is a short build - an encore, if you will, to the grandeur of the first track.

Much like these songs and past Elskavon albums, there is a journey of contrasts with every creative turn for Bartels, finding himself deep in a whirlwind of excitement and fear, anticipation and anxiety, inspiration and frustration. And while being fully aware of the negative sides of that whirlwind, there’s an indescribable beauty and hope in the choice to keep writing, to keep moving. And to not simply run from the negatives, but to allow them to inspire, to motivate.

A creative journey should never be easy or comfortable. If it is, the other side will most certainly be lacking in the beauty and depth it so desires.

With this next album era, Bartels is choosing to embrace the contrast.

IKSRE (I Keep Seeing Rainbows Everywhere) is the solo project of Naarm/Melbourne-based, classically trained multi instrumentalist, vocalist, producer and sound healer (dip. Sound Healing Academy, Cornwall), Phoebe Dubar. She combines field recordings from across the Australian landscape with lush strings, swirling synths and vocals; analogue synths, binaural beats and sound healing instruments to create a unique, ambient, neo-classical pop sound. 

She has released five critically acclaimed albums (BBC Radio 6, KEXP, RTE, triple j, double j, RRR, PBS-FM); with Constellation Tatsu, Hush Hush Records and Lo Recordings; and collabs w marine eyes (Past Inside the Present), Party Store (Stereoscenic) and anthène (Polar Seas).
