Para Freud, o sonho constitui "uma realização (disfarçada) de um desejo (reprimido)". Possui um conteúdo manifesto, que é a experiência consciente durante o sono, e ainda um conteúdo latente, considerado inconsciente. Este é composto por 3 elementos: as impressões sensoriais noturnas (por exemplo, a sensação de sede durante o sono), os restos diurnos (registros dos acontecimentos da véspera) e as pulsões do id (relacionadas a fantasias de natureza sexual ou agressiva). Esses elementos do sonho latente tendem a fazer o indivíduo despertar. E, durante o sono, em função da completa cessação da atividade motora voluntária, a repressão está enfraquecida, o que aumenta a possibilidade de as pulsões terem acesso à consciência. Todavia o sonho atua como "o guardião do sono"
