Over the past 10 years, Adam Westover, better known as Ovoid, has been creating symphonic musical adventures that span combine modern musicality with cutting-edge audio production and engineering. Psychedelic and mind bending, Ovoid’s music never disappoints; impossible to pass up and captivating in form, his compositions cultivate a distinct hallmark of the audiophile experience while bringing electrifying bass music to dance floors. As such, The Rust is honored to once again host his work, this time featuring the exclusive premiere of his track, “Desert Planet”, from his latest EP, Apocryphal. 

“Desert Planet” opens with elements of thick and decorative percussion. The cerebral LFOs dance in the background while building the melody with strums from a filtered guitar, and each embellished note elucidates deep echoes and fleshy reverb. Adam shines bright when incorporating many musical disciplines into his EPs; His creativity often radiates with nods to Eastern musical stylings and syncopated rhythms. He is constantly and dynamically evolving his tonal space and creating musical environments that conjure imagery of spaces that are both compressed and tight, and that explode into wide and galloping expanses of sound, and “Desert Planet” channels each of these distinct characteristics with ease. With the full release scheduled March 4th, the full release of Apocryphal is close on the coattails of this high-impact single.

He was drawn here by whispers of freedom, of a fresh start. In this city, anyone could carve out their future, but the price was steep. Twelve: A number that conjures myriad connotations. For most of us it’s the essential measurement of black gold, the source of mystery that can only be extracted through a fine stylus. For others, it’s a way of measuring half days and dozens, zodiac signs or apostles. For Sorrow, it’s his latest EP.

Five stark, soul-arresting narratives deep, once again the Bristol beatsmith compounds his distinctive icy, introspective signature with rich detail, emotion and cavernous shadowy dynamics. His first full solo release of 2017, and his first EP on Inspected in over two years, ‘The Twelve’ follows a run of critical excursions, cameos and collaborations on the likes of Fent Plates and White Peach and continues to build on his unique status within the electronic game.

From the opening house subversions and foggy, mystical humanised textures of ‘Want U Back’ right through to the final smouldering beat abstractions and soft groans of the breath-taking title track finale, the entire EP is a trip into Sorrow’s innermost soul. In between we’re hit by the two-step trickery of ‘Reverie’, the heavy haze of ‘Frumoasa’ and the unabashed slo-mo gully of ‘Sheol’, each chapter telling its own Sorrowful tale, alluring you and spurring you to further corners of your thoughts… conjuring myriad connotations, like all good sources of mystery should.

Humandala’s brand of aqueous, soul-infused electronic music takes full flight in the Qualia EP. As a full fledged multi-instrumentalist, his songwriting and performance chops dictate the wide variety of compositional styles under his belt, and Qualia follows suit with five distinct tracks. Flowing from smooth, jazzified chord progressions and subtle sound design to chunky synthesis and aggressive breakdowns, there’s few stones unturned by Humandala’s musical inquisition. As each track evolves throughout their individual arrangements, so does the EP’s flavor and intensity. There are no gaps to bridge in Qualia’s journey, with every song interlocking with juxtaposed songs around it like a form-fitting puzzle. It’s a powerful symbiosis that represents the EP’s full-service experience, and solidifies Qualia as Humandala’s most lucid release yet.
