Techno 2022

Darwin (@darwinspec) juggles many different roles in dance music as well as she juggles her records in the DJ booth. The Canadian-born, Berlin-based artist runs her own REEF parties at Berghain, and has nurtured a wealth of emerging talents on her SPE:C label. She is also the founder of Clean Scene, a climate action collective that wants to explore a more sustainable future for dance music. They recently authored a stark report about the industry's carbon footprint, which you can read through cleanscene.club/report.pdf. 

Darwin's sound is rooted in various UK styles, from bass to dubstep, garage to breakbeat. That is evident in the 100-minute mix she lays down for us this week. It opens with thoughts about environmentalism and some indigenous jungle recordings before grinding through chunky Afro drum patterns and supersized bass. The pressure builds throughout, the cavernous rhythms grow ever more muscular as the urge to snake your body becomes overwhelming. It's a perfectly balanced, well-controlled mix that showcases the irresistible power of heavyweight bass music.

D-Knox ( Donnell Knox ) is a living legend and integral member of Techno’s history, delivering funk-laden grooves, deep Detroit and hard-hitting Techno for the past 25+ years. 
Over that time he has gathered a following for his music both at home in the US, and overseas. Now residing in Warsaw ( Poland ) his sound continues to develop, as his passion never wavers.
Knox grew up in Kalamazoo ( Michigan, USA ), a city halfway between Detroit and Chicago, which goes a long way to explain the musical direction he’s taken over the years. As a musical youth he learned piano and drums before discovering dance music in the early ‘80s. Spending summer vacations with family in these two cities, he would listen to the Hot Mix radio show while in Chicago and The Wizard ( Jeff Mills ) on WJLB in Detroit, drawing inspiration and knowledge from two places that have been instrumental in House and Techno’s history. When his cousin, Jay Denham returned to Kalamazoo in the early ‘90s the two began making tracks together and later Denham introduced him to the likes of Derrick May and other early Detroit producers. After releasing tracks for various key labels, like Elypsia, Morbid, Magic Trax ( run by the influential 90’s magazine, Magic Feet ) and Denham’s Black Nation, he started his own Sonic Mind imprint, which continues to this day.

I first came across Pushmann when I was buying records and started to notice his stellar productions. Proper underground hypnotic groovy techno. He has had releases on some quality labels, most notably in 2021 on Jeff Mills' Axis and Kaiser's KSR. 

He has an album coming out in May 2022 on Matterwave Records that includes remixes from Ben Sims, Alexander Kowalski, Head Front Panel and Jeroen Search. Can't wait.

I am all about quality mixes above all else when it comes to choosing my guests and Pushmann has really delivered here. It's not often that a mix really blows me away, but when I came across "Pushmann @ Tresor (Berlin) 22_02_2020 (Closing Set)" (available on Pushmann's Soundcloud page) well that mix blew the socks right off my dainty little feet!! Go check.

This was my closing set at Nowadays on October 13 with Yumi and Call Super. I believe this mix represents the direction I'm headed as an artist, and furthermore is perhaps the best set I've played thus far in my career, in my own opinion. Huge thanks to DJ Voices for selecting me to close out her residency night with two of my favorite DJs. It was an absolute dream.

Whoever Client_03 is—their official bio says "neither human nor machine"—they certainly love electro. In the interview below, they say making it is "all I do." The stubbornly anonymous project has been making waves across continents and scenes, introducing audiences used to dubstep, drum & bass and trap to the distinctive joys of electro. Through a series of self-releases dating back to 2019, Client_03 has earned a fanbase with simple graphics and wonderfully jargon-y titles—"Prosperity Stream Divider," "Interpersonal Relationship Assessment"—that more than live up to the genre pastiche with genuinely funky electro grooves. Pitched between loose and robotic, their tracks are what we call rollers: stackable, interlockable and reliable.

This RA Podcast was recorded live at last year's Bass Coast Festival, where the masked producer's set was among the most anticipated. They—or it—didn't disappoint, and here we've got 60 minutes-plus of smooth and occasionally raucous electro that eventually mutates into dubstep, jungle and beyond. There are several spinbacks, tons of Client_03 material new and old and a few select tracks from artists like Sam Binga, Nikki Nair and Fixate. It's the sound of a certain kind of future, as refracted through its past.
