Radio 1 Guest Mix for Eats Everything 23.03.17

As Mosaic reaches release number 40, Steve O'Sullivan dives into another studio collaboration with his new label mate and expert hand, Mike Schommer - bringing in the talents of Rod Modell on remix duties. 

Etching two slices of dub heavy grooves that cover either side of the techno and house spectrum, their first effort emphasises the former on title track "Submerged" (B1). It doesn't pull any punches - precision moulded bass takes centre stage around evolving synths and classic delay action. 

Their 2nd "Depth Charge Dub" (B2) leans more towards the latter as the duo focus on the combination of a rolling sub, laidback percussion and subtle stabs that cycle gently around. 

The cherry on top comes in the form of Rod Modell's "DeepChord's Negative-Space Exploration Version" as he takes a 9 min trip to the hinterland of his sonic imagination, elegantly finding new layers and spatial effects. 

Call it what you will, 'dubbed out house with a splash of techno' or 'dubbed out techno with a splash of house' - this is heavyweight material.

For Phonica’s landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened; Stereofuse’s ‘Casino EP’, originally released on Berlin label Salo in 2003.

The ‘Casino EP’ marked the first collaboration between Martin Wörner & Thorsten Diegel as Stereofuse. They followed it up with a string of other 12”s for other labels but it’s this initial 12” that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on Salo and for very good reason. A timeless EP sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos & Craig Richards playing it regularly in their sets.

The EP kicks off with ‘Black Jack’, a pacey track which gets stuck in a serious groove. Skittering percussion, short looping samples and a breakbeat-feel in parts. A real tension builder and was a staple in the sets of Daniel Bell for many years. It is followed by ‘Hot Slot’, a techy dancefloor stomper led by a bouncing bassline and some intricate rhythmic patterns. The sweeping sound effects on this are bound to do some damage on a big system!

On the flip is the other killer track on the EP -  ‘Royal Flash’ is an understated and hypnotic minimal gem. The percussion and synth stabs give this track a sense of continuous forward motion whilst the long, soothing pads keep it firmly planted in the ground. ‘Pokerface’ closes the EP with expansive, luscious pads and circling delay, gently underpinned by a deep bassline.

While Thorsten and Martin eventually went their separate ways to work on their own individual projects, with renewed interest in the Stereofuse project this timely reissue could well mark a starting point for future collaborations. This record is also the first in a series of EPs released to commemorate 15 years of the Phonica Records shop in Soho, London.

"This Is Between Me And You" is fueled by a UK Garage vibe, while "Beauty Is Random" has more of an early 2000s microhouse groove. On the flip side, "Let Me Know" is a ruff jazzy house ballade and "Non Stop Funkin'" is tailored for dancefloors with a rolling and fast-paced note. Finally, each side starts with a jazzy hip-hop beat perfect for home listening.

A few months earlier, I was contacted by the collective Karitativ to make a podcast and at the same time highlight a charity action. 

I must confess that I am not an active or public activist even if a lot of subjects are obviously close to my heart. Most of the time, like everyone else, I militate by simple discussions or by certain daily gestures. 

Nevertheless, I have never had the opportunity, until now, to talk about a cause while bringing a musical touch to it. So I directly accepted!

With this free downloadable podcast, I decided to highlight the French non-profit organization "Fondation des Femmes" (Women's Foundation). 
With the health crisis, domestic violence against women has unfortunately increased significantly. This organization therefore collects funds in order to donate them to other organizations fighting directly for women on issues such as: domestic violence, discrimination, access to rights, awareness / prevention, and much more.

Once again many causes are important to me but I wanted to talk about this one today.
