A little while ago, someone posted this hilarious video taken at my show in Lafayette, Indiana.

I was singing live vocals over my talented friend TASO's track "Dio" (original available on Muti Music).
Well both of us were OVERWHELMED with how many requests we got for the "vocal version" that didn't exist!!  So, spurred on by the hilarity, I decided to write lyrics from the point of view of the guy with the trippy lights.  Enjoy!!

Too big to police, and under no clear international authority, these immense regions of treacherous water play host to the unbridled extremes of human behavior — some of it heroic, most of it not. The Outlaw Ocean is a New York Times Best Selling book that explores this lawless realm and the diversity of human rights, labor and environmental abuses occurring at sea. Drawing on more than five years of reporting, most of it offshore, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Urbina introduces us to the inhabitants of this world and their risk-fraught lives. A gripping adventure story, a stunning expose, this reportage brings fully into view for the first time the disturbing (and sometimes inspiring) reality of a floating world that connects us all, where anyone can do anything because virtually no one is watching.

Ian has released audio and video recordings from five years of reporting at sea, available to a handpicked number of electronic music artists to create collaborative albums, each focusing on a specific chapter or issue featured within the book.

As a lifetime enthusiast of marine life and environmentalist, I was naturally drawn to the chapter “The Next Frontier”. The story of the delicate war between marine life and human greed, the chapter follows Greenpeace ships as they peacefully protest oil drilling in the Arctic, and seek out evidence of protected marine life to legally halt environmentally irresponsible drilling in Brazil. I pulled their stories together into one narrative, anthropomorphizing the ship to sigh and creak with actual field recordings morphed with samples and wavetables from my own voice.

It's been 23 years since I started performing and releasing music as ill-esha, and I've had a lovely time meeting people around the globe and having wild and diverse adventures.

But neither my high school nickname nor the cruel and unbending genre algorithms fit the direction I've gone, and so I spent this pandemic releasing as many leftover children from the vault as I could. Today I have squeezed in one last song, my 20th song released in 2020 and my last solo release EVER as ill-esha.

I've still got some great collabs to release with artists like @xxstereotypexx , @koyomojo , @klabnz and many others. I'm still going to use this name for what she's evolved into - a music educator, a comedian, a supporter and promoter of gender equality in the industry, a mentor. 

But for pure artistry.. there is another phoenix rising from the ashes. Waiting in the wings. She's been patiently germinating for over three years and it's time to give her my full attention as an artist.

So I humbly ask, if you have enjoyed my music as ill-esha any time in the last 2+ decades, please enjoy this little swan song, a lovely daydream of life as perfect as stock footage.

Also celebrating that I reached over 100,000 monthly listeners for the first time ever on Spotify, so it seems fitting to go out with a bang....
Thank you everyone. I'm not leaving you, just cocooning a new kind of butterfly....

Joining forces for their first collaborative effort, K+Lab and ill-esha unleash sublime two-track EP, Simplications. The project finds the two distinctive keytar-wielding artists come full circle to their drum & bass origins as they now put their creative synergy to work in a boundless and experimental release.

Rattling sound design and slithering sonics paves the groundwork for “Complications,” which weaves syrupy vocals over intricate layers. Counterpart “Simplicity” also employs a similar frenzy of syncopated rhythms for its halftime structure, witnessing ill-esha & K+Lab come together for a dreamy, cacophonous paradox.
