Alphacut Records reloads its third wave with an upfront jungle plate. Meticulously selected over the years since the last allover amen statement Fundamentals EP as of cat.nr. ACR 3001, these four new killer tunes take no prisoners as well. 
Sumone (with his Planet Mu fame) and Dan Miles (formerly Skubi like on Modern Ruins) as the midwest cowboys meet the North Sea sailors Istari Lasterfahrer (running his Sozialistischer Plattenbau) and Ill_K (on Nord and re:st) to execute this smashing Darka Mentors EP!

"Wicked Man Sound" is one of the most sinister jungle sciences we came across lately. Choppage on point, layers like spread, stabbing basses, dark percussion, oldskool pads - you name it. "Crash!" feels like a UK hardcore banger, but is refreshingly switching breakbeats instead of gabba kicks. "Echo Chamber" drops an irresitable rave stab into the dubber dungeons and "Kuro" celebrates a very samurai style of a halftime cut to round up this breaksfest menue with ease.

Alphacut operates on a non-profit level, most releases cover their costs, if even. Half of any returns will be donated to Webster's Amen Break Gesture campaign II raising funds for the original creator of The Winston's Amen Brother breakbeat: Richard Spencer. With the deepest respect for this milestone of a sample!

Fresh from a series of artist-led 12"s, Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label returns with 'Dark Matter', its first compilation since 2017's 'Cosmology Selections'. Collected in a triple vinyl LP / digital formats, the release offers a fresh snapshot of the exciting possibilities and experiments happening at the intersection of hip-hop, jungle and bass music; a hybrid sound the label has pioneered since its first release eight years ago.

Across 14 tracks, 'Dark Matter' showcases Cosmic Bridge's growing global roster of artists: Moresounds, Danny Scrilla, Proc Fiskal, Margari's Kid, Oliver Yorke, J:Kenzo, TMSV, vromm, alongside new faces Samba and Rude Operator, and perennial favorites Es.tereo, Synkro and Djrum, the latter two in collaboration with label head Om Unit.

Stylistically the compilation covers a broad range, and gives listeners the space to digest it all with a running time of 75 minutes. There are stripped-down, meditative rollers such as TMSV's flute-led 'Ominous', the bass hypnosis of Danny Scrilla's 'Sacred Waters', and Samba's snappy, booming remix of Om Unit's 'The Lake'. The timeless energy of jungle is channeled in Proc Fiskal's 'Death', a percussive, bouncy number, while Moresounds plays with filters (and your mind) as he refines a less-is-more take of classic themes on 'Watating'. J:Kenzo highlights the music's Jamaican roots on 'Dub For Bashenga'; a tough, pounding cut that goes straight for the chest and which finds its counterpoint in Rude Operator's 'Broken Sky'.

For those who like more expansive, cinematic approaches there are epic waves of drums, slick editing and euphoria in Es.tereo's 'Floating Point' and Vromm's 'Decentralized', while Oliver Yorke's 'Treasured' and Margari's Kid's 'Challenger' squeeze soul from colder sound palettes and tight breakbeats.

Om Unit's two collaborations, 'Reflections' with Synkro and 'Ruins' with Djrum, reflect the compilation's ambitions and breadth. The former is a delicate, uplifting roller that sets you up for the dark rumblings, freeform stylings and frenetic rhythms of the latter. The compilation ends with a track that arguably stands tall on its own, Crypticz's 'Chrysalis' feat. Amy Kisnorbo; an 11-minute epic that plays out like a love letter to the magic of breakbeat science, dub technology and human creativity.

Dark Matter is a finely crafted statement of intent from Cosmic Bridge and Om Unit, shunning easy self-congratulation for a dive into the musical potentials and connections of a sound that is now an established part of the global bass music vocabulary.

Om Unit steps into 2020 with ‘Submerged’, a six-track EP comprised of varied uptempo grooves, which in his own way defy categorisation once again. The EP draws influence from various aspects of the techno landscape as much as borrowing from tropes of previous work including his trademark use of space, rhythmic tension and sub-heavy hypnotic bass melodies. A record that showcases further diversity and sonic innovation within the realm of what has been coined ‘160’, a loose term to describe a movement which he himself has helped to pioneer since the early 2010’s.

Submerged opens with the electro-inspired ‘Patterning’, which takes as much influence from Detroit as from the rhythmic structure of jungle and broken beat, drawing a parallel between these forms in a similar fashion to artists such as deep blue or even 4 hero might have in the 90’s but with an upfront broken structure that might even be described as ‘retro-futurist’ in it’s electro sensibilities. ‘A Groove’ comes next leaning fully into a 4 x 4 foundation, with classic Juke-style construction, paying respect to modern funk in the process with it’s classic Roland pads and sun-drenched synth lead line whilst borrowing a jungle break here and there not in a dissimilar fashion to his work as ‘Philip D Kick’. Side A closes with ‘Vertigo’ which takes us in to a minimal eyes-down realm with a hypnotic vocal sample and a half-stepping percussive structure all supported by a seriously low sub-rhythm. Not one for the feint-hearted selector. Side B opens with ‘Runes’ which invokes a sense of nostalgia back to his work on ‘threads’ with gently rolling percussion and bass lines that support a synth landscape that invoke the a sense of the other-worldly dance-floor. Next up it’s ‘Long Summer’ a grounded and percussive Jazzy workout not that dissimilar to tracks from 2019’s ‘Violet’ EP, taking influence from Bukem’s classic ambient jungle of the 90’s but with his own unmistakable half-stepping ‘slow-fast’ groove. The record closes with ‘Peninsula’ which again whilst not being dissimilar to the work of ‘Violet’ this time takes the 160 realm into to a slow-mo 4/4 groove heavily inspired by the masters of dub techno, backed up with a classic syncopated breakbeat in classic Om Unit style.

This EP is another chapter in Om Unit’s work around the 160bpm realm, taking complete ownership of his process and leaning away from the confines of genre once again, expressing ideas that whilst lean heavily into known places make connections that some might not at first easily perceive.

You already know ILL_K's sound design and arrangements are different from others, rich in details and a wild mixture of headnodding halfstep and fast jungle breaks at the same time. 
Persecution is a prime example for that, just when you thought you figured out its groove with the stomping bass kicks, some nasty breakbeats come running through the speakers like thousands of lemmings at the same time.

Since these guys released a 12" on my label all of their other tracks got signed straight away, so it was really hard for me to get a new one from them. Of course for a trio it's not that easy to bang out many tunes because all three want to work in a studio together. 
But when they collaborate on new stuff it's always highest grade material: "Powa" has everything i love about this sound at 85 bpm: stomping bass, jungle breaks, subtle energy and lots of bass and therefore fits perfectly on the "Omega" compilation.

Yoofee sent me "Arrival" shortly after the release of his "Visualize EP" on TTE and i played it in nearly all my DJ sets. The first drop hits you directly after the intro and can be a bit tricky in the mix but who said DJing should be easy? Of course Yoofee is always developing his production standards and therefore he was a bit shocked that i had to play the tune at this quality the whole time. ;) He polished it into a 110% better VIP version after i signed it for the compilation and i am sure you'll agree that it is one of his best works yet!

When Sun People played at the record release party for his "Stumble & Grow EP" in Berlin in January 2020, Provoke sent him some beats via e-mail. So when we just finished breakfast the day after the party Simon played them in my kitchen via his phone. And man, i can tell you i was already hooked by Provoke's sound just by the sound coming out of this iphone speakers! He's a wizard when it comes to fast drums and agile percussions. I approached him via soundcloud and he sent me a WIP version of "The World" a few hours later. This was exactly the tune i was hoping for and i am very happy to have him on the line up for this compilation!

10 - Sun People - Movement. @simon-off

There's a special connection between Through These Eyes and Sun People, not only because his "Fight Dem Back/Nu Gun" 12" from 2017 sold out so fast. So of course Simon HAD to be on the tracklist of this compilation. Funny enough, "Movement" was the last tune that got added to the final tracklist. ;)
It's this certain level of deepness and authenticity in his productions that make him an outstanding producer. Don't make the mistake and skip through his tracks, Sun People is a master of slowly creating an intense atmosphere that makes you want to listen to his stuff on repeat again and again.
