I think it was around mid-December when the letter came through, although, I must admit that it is becoming harder and harder to remember.
Strange things happen when we witness traumatic events or when something bizarre or uncanny happens before our eyes. Everyone reacts differently. Of course we do. Humanity, after all, is a fairly diverse collection of solid lumps of meat and blood.
However, despite this, there are still reactions you may consider ‘stock standard’, and my brains efforts at removing all memory I have of the letter and the subsequent events that occurred are definitely what I would class as that.
For this reason the events shall be recounted here, in as much detail as I can muster with the vocabulary and experience at my disposal, more for my sake than anyone else’s.
When the letter came through I was fairly excited I must admit. We live in an internet age, and while an email may seem fairly normal and boring, there is something about receiving a letter (at least one that isn’t a bill or something of the sort) that is all the more exciting.
It was fairly obvious that that the letter had not been sent through the post and had been delivered by the sender themselves for two reasons.
Firstly, there was nothing on the front of it at all, leaving the plain, brown envelope looking all the more mysterious, meaning that it having been delivered was simply not plausible.
Secondly, the letter, by my best guess, was delivered during the early hours of the morning. For this reason, and the fact I don’t actually notice anything having been passed through my door until I am literally leaving for work, I couldn’t open the letter as soon as I noticed its presence.
So, with a heavy heart and a great deal of intrigue, I placed the letter quickly on the table and rushed off to work.
I work in a Garden Centre, exciting I know, and whilst my job is usually fairly enjoyable and time passes by at a nice, brisk rate. On this particular day, time was at a standstill. The envelope and its contents should have evoked no fear in me whatsoever, I get that. After all, I am sure hundreds of people around the country on that exact day received envelopes through their door and weren’t half as anxious as I was.
However, as the day progressed I could feel the worry and intrigue chip away at me. I could feel the curiosity mounting hour by hour, reaching a horrible crescendo as my shift drew to a close. Something about the envelope felt off, and despite not being a strong believer in the concept of premonition, I couldn’t help but feel something was going to happen.
When I arrived home I very quickly made my way over to the table. The drive home had been horrible, with every possibility of what could be inside the envelope racing through my mind at a ridiculous rate.
Even with the envelope in my hand I found myself hesitating, almost certain that whatever was inside would not actually be anywhere near as exciting as I had allowed myself to believe.
Finally, after far too much hesitation, I decided to take the plunge and open the very vessel that had already caused me more worry than it should have done.
Inside was a small piece of paper with an address and a time scribbled on the front. On the back of the piece of paper were the words 'everybody loves a mystery'. lol if you read all of this.
