Known for crafting infectious rhythms infused with an otherworldly strangeness, UK-based producer CAIN makes his debut on Darker Than Wax with Sarissa - a seven-tracker driven by his signature percussive style.

Written in his native highlands of Scotland and heavily influenced by the mountainous landscapes, Sarissa seeks to fuse together organic and synthetic sounds in unusual ways. True to his ethos of joining the dots between folk music from cultures around the world, the melodies and rhythms explored throughout are tied together by their timeless, ethereal quality. Interlocking rhythms lead the way as the skeleton in this music with cinematic harmonies woven in and out, leading the listener through dark valleys and emotional peaks.

Each tune tells its own story and has a distinct feel from the next – from the jilting rhythms and hazy rave feel of ‘Sarissa’, the crawling basslines of ‘Gecko’, and the ethereal lightness of ‘Marwa’ to the harmonic weight of Kuro. The seven cuts making up Sarissa are equally effective as dancefloor weapons, or as accompaniments on long foggy walks.

Mike Casey is a melody poet. The story-telling songwriter, producer, & sonic alchemist is a multi-talented force whose soul stirring saxophone sound and creative conception reaches out with love & embraces your musical desires, one note at a time. Bringing the joy of jazz across genre lines to a diverse audience around the world, Mike’s music has had support the BBC, HuffPost, NPR, Tracklib, JazzTimes, Jazz FM, Spotify's "Best Jazz of 2020 & 2021", Worldwide FM, NTS & countless others. In 2020, his trio was 1 of 5 global finalists in the largest ensemble based competition in jazz: the DC Jazz Festival's "DC Jazz Prix".

On a mission to be a passionate vessel for “jazz” in the 21st century, his searing sound, always aiming to tell a story, demands the attention of the listener. Mike loves to pose musical "questions" to the audience, keeping them engaged, & FEELING.

Electronic Jazz Guest Mix - Magical Mystery Mix

Award winning artist and producer Plutonic Lab returns today, releasing music that comes drenched in striking R&B tones: new single, ‘Good Thing’. 

Featuring frequent collaborator, vocalist Natalie Slade, ‘Good Thing’ revels in nostalgic and romantic vibes. Plutonic Lab, applying his expert ear for melody and arrangement, constructs a beautiful, dreamy soundscape that Slade’s rich vocals weave effortlessly throughout.

The genesis of ‘Good Thing’ started - as with most sonic ideas - in the studio, with Plutonic Lab working on different ideas at his Wurlitzer electric piano. The cyclical melody, coupled with the chords, became the base of the song and from there, ‘Good Thing’ would grow into something great. Inspired by the Wurlitzer melody, Slade found herself creating within a sonic scope that was built on beautiful decadence and fantasy.

The fantastical elements of ‘Good Thing’ make the track an immersive listen. 
“Never give up on your good love, I won’t,” Slade sings, as orchestral strings swell around the lush production. The addition of brass and rhythmic builds beautifully, giving ‘Good Thing’ a rich vintage sound. 

“I created a demo for Natalie that already had the basic drums (which were a kind of slow samba), strings, bass guitar and the Wurlitzer electric piano parts, I also added that popcorn synth sound that plays the melodic counter to the piano. I named the beat ‘Wurly Dreams’ and I think the title inspired Nat to write the song”.  Plutonic Lab

Plutonic Lab and Slade have been collaborators for years, with Slade appearing on previous Plutonic Lab offerings, as well as their group project SOUNDS LIKE FRANCO. Slade has also been courting international attention for her solo work; her signing to UK label Eglo Records seeing her in the company of artists including Fatima and Floating Points.

Across the years and releases, the duo’s dynamism has strengthened; a strength that comes across so easily in ‘Good Thing’. It’s soul music that evokes memories of decades gone by, while still putting a fresh and contemporary foot forward.
