Grotesque drums hiss and boom inside drill’s stricture, voices utter shattered phrases to each other in a darkening chain of whispers, synthetic violins mourn their last and rush towards singularity. Drawing upon the ‘self indulgent, purple prose’ of Angela Carter, the staggering works of composers Villa Lobos and Xennakis, the fissure between pagan mysticism of England past and its feckless, soul consuming present; ‘England as a Succubus’ is a lustful spirit that writhes and vibrates against a backdrop of lurid sonic pressure. 

Raised amongst the trees of the North Dorset countryside and presently residing in Manchester, Ship Sket grapples with a frenetic and maximalist style that subverts and perverts expectations of UK bass music with equal measure.

Mun Sing’s forthcoming ‘Frolic’ EP adopts the drama and intricacy of his productions to create a surreal, demented fairytale. In this world, fun and indulgence come at a price; a shadow of consequence is embodied in the form of a sinister blue faced scarecrow. He is a boogeyman of sorts, akin to the beasts scaring children into good-behaviour in bed time stories, but now finding his form in adulthood. The Scarecrow reminds us that everything comes at a price, and punishes those that have too much fun. He is the embodied voice of guilt after you choose one more drink, one more episode. He lays dormant, silently watching until it’s time to strike. Can we ever really escape this lurking figure? In the times we have succeeded, how long does it last?



‘Frolic’ follows a narrative that begins with indulgence and moves through to consequence; starting with euphoric melodies and big room drops ('Frolic', 'Didn’t Need U Anyway') and ending in moments of unravelling reflection ('Scrolling', 'The Hypocrite'). The Scarecrow reveals himself for the first time during the breakdown of the EP’s centrepiece ‘Somersault’; a theatrical club epic in which the scarecrow cackles the lines “You plead a pregnant passage yet frolic and frot without consequence!?” summarising the spirit of the EP succinctly. 



The concept of indulgence has fuelled the composition of ‘Frolic’ as a whole, where Mun Sing would lean into singalong melodies and satisfying drops using a more inclusive musical language in favour of the grief-inspired awkwardness of last years debut album ‘Inflatable Gravestone’ (Planet Mu). ‘Frolic’ is inspired by big stadium pop concerts for its large-scale storytelling and pantomime-esque audience participation. After years of navigating loss and spirituality, Mun Sing found the natural next step to be writing music which explores the dialogue of joy and escapism.

Balancing analogue & acoustic soundworlds with digital and synthetic aesthetics, Stolen Velour, FLOCO & Aria SL first began working on the EP back in 2022. They debuted their lead single ‘Lilium’, a cover of the main theme to anime ‘Elfen Lied’ which is written in Latin, at Loughborough Junction’s Spanners alongside a lineup including Petal Supply, Himera, Iglooghost & Umru. Some months after, they continued to perform iterations of the track amongst other music at varied spots like The White Hotel & Laylow, which informed their approach to music as three collaborators. They eventually completed ‘Long Way Round’ over the summer of 2023 via several sessions across London & Leeds. In a sudden burst of creativity, they completed the final two tracks a year later, forming a fully-fledged EP spanning contemporary classical, folk, pop, experimental electronic and more. Using extended classical and experimental techniques within a pop music context, the EP foregrounds narrative leitmotifs to chronicle a departure from naivety and innocence into a darker, more complex world. With all three artists coming from their own corners of the music world, their EP ‘Holdfast’, named after the anchoring root system of seaweeds, enmeshes their love of synthetic & analogue technologies with the beauty inherent in periods of personal transformation.

Bristol’s Sarahsson is a force to behold. A composer, producer, performance artist and DJ, her intricate work is a visceral expression of divine queerness and her experience with synaesthesia.

Originally hailing from Exeter, when she moved to London she discovered a queer community that hadn’t been present in her hometown and so began to explore the rejection of genres and the dissolution of gender. Drained by the male dominance in electronic music, Sarahsson’s first forays into more experimental sounds and parties helped direct her own personal journey—exploring the feminine, synaesthesia and blurring the lines between binaries.

Inspired as much by the natural world as she is by gore and harsh noise, Sarahsson fuses elements of classical music with metal, experimental electronics and hardcore. Her debut LP The Horgenaith explores themes which Sarahsson equates with queerness: “Transmutation, embodying contradicting parts of oneself,” she says. “Finding familiarity in difference is a lot of what queerness is about for me”. A multi-dimensional commentary on “femininity's cultural proximity throughout history to nature and rediscovering the body as a landscape, its constant state of flux and transience.”

Joining label alumni AYA, Kai Whiston, Emily Glass and more, Sarahsson’s signing to Illegal Data is a testament to her unique sonic offering and her visually arresting live performance, which involves classical and contemporary instrumentation and various audio interfaces.

With a grant from Saffron Records she also spent time at a woodwork studio building her own Daxophone, a wildly curious bowed instrument, and rejected pre-made samples, choosing to create her own instead. Field recordings of marsh reeds and whispers become percussion atop the blasting sound of crushing waste removal machines.

A truly special voice in the current climate of electronic music, Sarahsson brings together her unique ear for melody, rich textural harmony and dramatic narratives to achieve something genuinely awe inspiring and timeless on her debut LP. Creating a piece of work so honest and nurturing yet accessible and open, it raises open questions rather than dishing out rigid statements.

On her emotionally charged sound Sarahsson says: “I'm trying to reach a very specific feeling. One tiny point in the middle of a nuclear explosion where everything happens all at once, bittersweet and fierce, a moment when opposites collide into one. The nexus point.”

Having already performed in parts of the UK and Europe with the likes of Lyra Pramuk, Oklou, Swan Meat etc. and as part of a SOPHIE tribute show for Club Quarantine in 2021, Sarahsson now has her sights set on bringing her album to a live setting across Europe and the rest of the world.

Named after the anchoring root system of seaweeds, Holdfast is the debut EP from artists Stolen Velour, FLOCO & Aria SL. Enmeshing their love of synthetic and analogue technologies with the beauty inherent in transformation, the record pulls listeners into an eerie sonic landscape where digital aesthetics meet acoustic instrumentation, experimentalism and classical sensibilities. Released on Illegal Data—the Bristol-based label helmed by Mun Sing & NE$$, the EP fuses club, folk and pop influences with nods to anime and musical theatre, crafting a sound as unpredictable and chaotic as the label it lands on. Forming a bond through DJing at house parties in South East London, the three collaborators created Holdfast, a work that conveys their shared voice amidst the fluctuations of city life as young adults. Where to start with AYA… Another genuine GENIUS and the one true patron saint of all things FUN and unpretentious. TEEN, short for TEMPA TEEN was the world’s first family-friendly Tempa T tribute act, in which he would perform expletive-free renditions of ‘Next Hype’ and request each audience member donate a CD upon entry, only to end on a grande finale in which he would quite literally, give everyone ‘their CDs back’. However, after a lengthy legal battle with Tim Westwood and Tempz’s management, label and publisher (all of which, Tim Westwood), TEMPA TEEN was forced to stop his tribute act and change his name. :(

During this dark time, TEEN would lock himself in his bedroom for months and play ‘Next Hype’ over and over again until he cried himself to sleep. But one day, this all changed…. In the middle of the night, he woke up to the sound of his over-played Tempa T album skipping, on a constant horrible, out of time loop.

And that was when it hit him…This annoying digital glitch sound was the second most beautiful thing he’d ever heard in his life (the first obviously being ‘Next Hype’ by Tempa T), and so he decided to start making original music with a view to replicate this sound… and lo and behold, the debut TEEN EP was born!

But wait, can this grime-obsessed introvert really take ALL the credit for this insanely banging EP?? Of course not. This is the music biz after all and we all know that no true talent can ever exist without a cool as fuck label run by two absolute legends and a shit tonne of nepotism to present it to the world.. so big up to us, the REAL brains behind this operation..ILLEGAL DATA!

 Having (never) played with the likes of Arca, Sophie and Oneohtrix Point Never, with tracks (never heard or) played out from DJs like Apex Twin, Ben UFO and like Four Tet or Caribou or one of them, this fine Bristol (#banksy #trip-hop) lad has CLEARLY already gotten approval from the #scene. So what the hell are you waiting for? Listen and download and share and like and write about this release til yr heart’s content, or at least until Aphex Twin actually replies to our emails. On that note, anyone got a contact for Aphex Twin?
