The congregation grew.

That is what happened between March 1923 and April 1923. Edwin Baird published the first issue of Weird Tales and the letters came in before the magazine even went to press. By April, he had his answer: the readers he believed existed did exist. The church of gooseflesh fiction had a congregation. They came back for the second issue. They sent in their skeletons — the weird events of their family histories, not exceeding a thousand words, for five dollars each — because Weird Tales was the only magazine that would publish them.

WEIRD TALES VOL. 2 is a 21-track dark trap / evil religious / dark horror phonk concept album drawing from every story in the second issue of the magazine. The sonic architecture is identical to Vol. 1: D minor throughout, 1923 vinyl static as carrier frequency, dark organ for the supernatural register, horror phonk for the body horror and Southern Gothic material, evil religious trap for the stories that earn the sermon cadence.

The second issue is a different beast than the first. Vol. 1 was the founding — raw, varied, the whole spectrum of what the magazine intended to be. Vol. 2 is the magazine finding its confidence. The Bodymaster is one of the most elaborate horror novelettes in the issue — a detective story with a fiend who transfers his consciousness between bodies, leaving black fingerprints on the throats of the vacated. Jungle Death brings voodoo and crocodile patience to Honduras. The Snake Fiend introduces the specific horror of a man who absorbed the venomous nature of reptiles as a child and now uses them as instruments of revenge. A Square of Canvas is the artist's story — the man in the asylum showing his visitor a blank white canvas that he insists is his masterpiece.

The Eyrie sermon frames the album twice: opening with the preacher who is growing in confidence, closing with the preacher who knows the congregation is coming back for a third issue. Between them, the twenty-one stories of April 1923. The vinyl crackle runs under everything. The organ holds. The service resumes.

The congregation is larger now.
The door stays open.
