Gulf Hymn Reprise

In anticipation of the impending July 7 release of Soul Sister, ILLUMNTR and Lowtemp offer you "Dark Days."  Inspired by the eponymous film from director Marc Singer (http://bit.ly/1qCarJp), the track introduces itself as something distinctly Earthly, beginning as an homage to classic soul and the classic angst of being "down and out in New York City."

Its destination, however, depends entirely on the listener.  Just as Singer's film so powerfully illustrates, human beings don't always react the same way when faced with hopelessness.  Some look up to the heavens; others clamber down into the tranquility of the abyss.

And so it goes with Dark Days: by the time you hear the gasped breath that marks its final measure, you'll realize either that you've rocketed up into the faintly-illuminated reaches of outer space, or that you've descended down into "inner space," into the vast, crumbling network of deserted subway lines that lie like ancient ruins beneath New York.

But are these two destinations really so different?  Or does the difference lie only in the traveler?  After all, whether from the glimmer of distant stars or from the flickering glow of a trash-kindled campfire in an abandoned MTA tunnel somewhere deep below New York City, it would seem that nowhere in the universe is truly lightless.
