In the very first episode we take you to the Saudi Arabia in its early modern state around 1938 in order to recount the events that occurred in the Hijaz and how the Al-Saud clan became its leading family at a time of great unrest and bloody tribal rivalries during the final days of the Ottoman Khilafa.

In the second episode of its first season, we explore how the al-Saud clan enacted a pact with Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab in 1744 and how that has set the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the path a very much debated history. The person and career of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab is analysed from a historical perspective in order to present an intimate yet objective portrait of the man behind the movement.

In the third episode of its first season we take the listener back to 1902 to venture into the Najd region where Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud is pioneering and socialising an entire population of desert Bedouins as part of his social engineering project to create a new military pillar that will support and strengthen his ambition to conquer and rule over the Hijaz. 

The emergence of this new group from the desert training camps (Hujjar) marks the birth of Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud's 'Ikhwan' (The Brethren) movement. With their complicity he will revolutionise Arabia and usher it into a new historic era however what the future has in store for the Ikhwan will take everyone by surprise.

Episode 3 - The Desert Ikhwan of Saudi Arabia

The Green History Podcast continues its weekly audio adventures into Islamic history. 

In the fourth episode of its first season we venture into the Arabian desert in order to witness the fateful night in which the King's old guard - the Ikhwan, finally decide to confront the King during in a secret council meeting. The Ikhwan would soon reject the King's orders and break out onto a major revolt resulting in much bloodshed and calamity in the new kingdom.

Episode 4 - The Ikhwan Revolt

In the fifth episode of its first season we explore the the golden era of Saudi Arabia following the Kingdom's discovery of oil and the influx of foreign luxury products. Saudi Arabia prior to 1979 is often cited as a time when the region was more relaxed and less strict, it also reflect the modern effort in the Kingdom to return to a more cosmopolitan and less puritanical society.

Episode 5 - The Oil Kingdom

The Green History Podcast continues its weekly audio adventures into Islamic history. 

Juhayman, the man who revived the Ikhwan in 1977 and went on to cause reversal of socio-religious policies in the kingdom from 1980 to this day. Beginning with open criticism of the Saudi establishment, Western culture, the prevalence of Music, free-mixing and printed images on Saudi currency - his group went on to isolate themselves from mainstream Muslims to the point of contempt for anyone who did not share their perspectives.

Find out more about the history of the Jama' Salafiyya al-Muhtasiba and how they developed with the patronage and guidance of the most senior scholar at the Islamic University of Madinah during the 1960s - 1970s before it all came crashing down at the hands of some over-zealous and radical youth who went on to become the new Ikhwan under the leadership of Juhayman.

Following his fall out with the senior scholars of Madinah and his escape from the city, Juhayman finds a new alliance with a popular young scholar from Riyadh who would soon come to be identified by Juhayman and his fellow Ikhwan as the promised Mehdi. Juhayman's mission takes a dramatic turn following the arrival of the Mehdi in the ranks of the Ikhwan.
