Since getting sober I have had a lot of extra time to think about what I have been doing with my time in a bright and positive way. One of the many benefits of getting sober.

I have always wanted to combine my graphic work and music through the years, have usually designed or art directed my own album covers. I have released music through the years with different labels and in different formats, often limited edition vinyl records that often don’t get a digital release. 

So I’m starting this little label just to collect and archive my music, it’s not anything for profit but any profits of one record go into financing the next one and so on. So any contribution is more than welcome. I have always made money to pay the bills from graphic work and always wanted the music to be free of any financial input and will keep trying to keep this as minimal as possible.

The name of the label is “ILMA” an acronym for “ILO MUSIC ARCHIVES” but also in Icelandic “ILMA” means smell. I wanted to use those ideas of the senses as a starting ground for the label, play with the ideas of sound, visuals, smell, taste and what is what in that world. The music will be in digital format but the cover art will be in physical format so each release will have a different physical object. I remember some of my first records I bought, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane and the KLF. I did not have a record player and for a long time I had those objects with graphics and meaning but had no means to listen to them. There was music inside them and they had this mystery about them.

I wanted to revisit that idea of a precious piece of cover artwork that somehow has music attached to it. The first release will be a remastered version of a record I did in 2001 called Champaneria EP. It came out originally on a label in Iceland called 66 Degrees, I used to work doing artwork in Thule Music the parent label that released it. This new version is remastered by Conor Dalton at Glowcast Audio Mastering in Berlin.

The cover is a cross stitch version of the original album art which was a photograph taken out of the airplane window going from Barcelona back to Reykjavik. I had been living in Barcelona for a year and made the record while living there, living there kind of made me understand house music better than before and still live with those memories. I wanted this version to be like a pillow you find on your grandparents sofa, something homey, warm and welcoming you back home. It’s produced in 50 copies and is available on Bandcamp as well as the tracks.

Continuing from the last release, these tracks were created between 2002 and 2003. I discovered them on old CDs while searching for the original tracks for Champaneria, the first record on the label. All the tracks are unreleased, except for the title track "Yesterday," which was released on vinyl in 2009 by the Icelandic label S-hit Records.

The artwork for this collection is a spray-painted bunch of artificial flowers. The tracks were produced with very limited equipment, either an old PC or my first laptop. They were inspired by graffiti and the culture I was immersed in during that time in Iceland, an attempt at creating beauty from synthetic machines.

The tracks were mastered by Matthew Sargeant in 2024.
