Walk On Water

"This recording was made with a single stereo microphone placed in the room at one of my performances. The gig was completely acoustic; we had no instrument amplification or microphones for the voice. I was singing and playing acoustic guitar and was joined by Amy Crankshaw on French horn. I like to make rough recordings of live performances for my own archives, usually without plans to release them. However, in this case, I wanted to share what an intimate, stripped-down version of this song sounded like, without the support of any studio production techniques. I appreciate the attention my listeners have given my studio releases so far and wanted to give them something special in the form of this candid behind-the-scenes style recording."

Artwork:

The photograph in the artwork features my friend James and I having a "jam" way back when. James is a good friend of mine and we shared many wonderful moments together in our childhood. 

When I sing the first two lines of verse two, I often think of James (see the lyrics below). I thought that including the two of us on the cover would be a good way to visually represent the nostalgic sense of longing present in the song.

"I want to drive my car right down the coast line
And live with my friends nearby"

The photograph in the background was taken by myself many years ago on a road-trip with my Dad. 

The combination of the two photographs really captures an essence of some of the best parts of my childhood in Cape Town.

The text was handwritten by myself and then digitised by Analia Oliver, a wonderful artist in Argentina. Analia was also responsible for merging, blending and stylising the artwork digitally.

I Don't Want to See Anybody

Lava Kiss is a solo project of London (UK) based singer/songwriter, musician and producer Chris Willow. The name, Lava Kiss, was inspired by a Grandaddy song of the same title and Willow has been releasing music under the moniker since mid 2019.

His debut album is expected in Spring 2020, and in keeping with the singles released so far, will expand upon his mellotron tinged indie-rock sound. The upcoming album,  “Submarine Dream”, is a themed collection of ocean-related songs that would receive heavy rotation among the fictitious crew of the “R/V Belafonte”, as depicted in Wes Anderson’s film the The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.   

Lava Kiss’ debut single Oceanarium combines a hazy-summer vibe akin to bands like Beatenberg, The Naked And Famous and Empire of the Sun with a polyrhythmic arrangement you could hear from the likes of Vampire Weekend and Sufjan Stevens.

With his second single Swordfish Willow showcased his penchant and knack for weaving a metaphorically rich narrative fuelled by cutting and addicting lyrics, topping the SoundCloud's "Hot & New: Indie Chart".

Other recent releases include the dark and cooky Donovan-esque Octopus the rhythmic self-deprecating gospel stomp Walk on Water, and the fantastical epic Atlantis.

I Don't Want to See Anybody, his most personal song so far, gives contrast to the bigger productions that proceeded it with a stripped back and intimate arrangement.
