After the soulful release of their self-titled Extra Medium EP on Record Breakin' Music, DJ/producer duo Sam Champ and Buscrates16-Bit Ensemble return with a freebie to honor the legend that paved the way to their love of chopped rhodes samples, crisp snares, and un-quantized bass lines. Using the same sample source material from their EP, the Extra Medium team reworks Jay Dee’s classic, unofficial remix of D'Angelo's "Me & Those Dreamin' Eyes Of Mine" with the assistance of singer/keyboardist Selan. At first listen, the production is so similar, you may think it's a remastered version of the original. But when making a dedication to hip hop's most mourned and influential producer, they decided to recreate the masterpiece to perfection. This includes Selan’s spot-on D’Angelo harmonics and ad libs from the original. Three super fans paying the utmost respect, dedication, and praise to the man that changed the way the we listen to and create music. 

And as a bonus, the instrumental is available for blends, D’Angelo karaoke, and multiple rewinds/repeats.

In the summer of 2012, Onra & Lexis joined forces to tackle a project based on a music period they both love so much. That brief period from approximately ’93 to ’96: the New Jack Swing sound got dated and soulful club music became much closer to the Hip-Hop productions of the time to create this Urban R’n’B type of music.

We simply call this era the “Throw Em’ Up” period in reference to the way that everyone in clubs and videos was vibin’ to these tracks: just throw up both your arms and wave them around nonchalantly (if possible with a champagne glass). The selection rules we followed for Vol. 2 are simple: #1: Soul artists featuring MC’s are ok, but not the other way around. #2: All of the picks have to pass the “throw em’ up” dance test, which means: no New Jack Swing stuff, no Timbaland because although Timbo is a genius it’s really a different kind of sound which shaped the late 90′s / early 2000′s sound.

So after the huge success of Throw Em’ Up vol.1 we decided we had to do it again because there are just so many amazing tracks that never really made it big that deserve to be heard!

So after weeks of obsessive research, the mix was recorded live in one take. We made sure to stay under 80 minutes so you can burn it to a CD and take it on the road with you. Vol.2 definitely goes a little bit deeper in the archives of 90′s R&B: we pulled out tons of slept-on tracks, rare versions and remixes.

Peace Everyone…..

Today is February 7th, 2013….which means it is the birthday of one of the greatest Hip Hop Producers of all time, James Yancey aka J Dilla.  Today he would've been 39 years old.  It is incredible that every month of February for the last 8 years that Dilla's life & music is celebrated around the whole world.  It is also bittersweet because he was taken from us in such an early age when it looked like he was really get ready to take the world by storm.  I've been very lucky & blessed to be part of his close circle of friends when he moved to Los Angeles.  Not only was he was a talented individual and one of the nicest & humble guy I ever met, he was also a private person…..you definitely don't want to get on his nerves…LOL!!

I know there's a lot of Dilla Tribute mixes out there, and me personally, I don't think there's anyone that can out top a Dilla mix that was made by my fellow Beat Junkie & the 3rd Member of Jaylib, the Funky President himself, J.Rocc.  The only one who can possible come close would our good friend, Houseshoes.  I already made 2 mixes a few years ago, but I was inspired again to work on another one.  I tried to finish the mix late last night but got real tired….I just finally finished this mix before the day was over.  I definitely was trying not to repeat songs like I did on my previous Dilla mixes but sometimes you can't help going back to his classic catalogue.  Anyways, here's my third installment of my "J Dilla Whatupdoe" mixes, a 30 minute vibe mix.  Unfortunately, we also lost another Musical legend a few days ago….Mr. Donald Byrd, and i actually added the original "Think Twice" song to the mix as well as Dilla's version, in paying homage to the legendary musician.

Rest in Peace to Donald Byrd…..and Rest In Peace & Happy Birthday to one of the greatest….J Dilla.
