This show takes the form of a listening session and record launch at Refugee Worldwide Radio. Outside the radio booth and in the presence of guests, the vinyl record of the forthcoming album afterlife by ILYICH will be launched into orbit.

afterlife is a musical journey through fantastical stories, soundscapes and the pulse of a new beginning.

Conceiving the afterlife as something unfolding now, the album afterlife is responding to the military invasion of Ukraine with semi-fictional narratives, cinematic soundscapes, bass grooves and poems, string orchestras and broken beats. afterlife is a practice of grieving and new beginnings, life after the latest moment of personal and collective history. The album embraces an uneasy place as the dawn of the fantastical.

Accompanied by allied musicians of various genres, ILYICH embarks on this journey and explores its multidimensional map. The album invites the audience to join forces by listening, dancing and redreaming the world as a world after war.

This newly commissioned sound installation meditates on early memories entwined with politics and music. The soundtrackʼs associative, poetic narrative draws on past-life recollections of war and music heard during childhood in Kherson, in a neighbourhood inundated after the Kakhovka Dam was blown up by Russian troops and threatened by possible sabotage of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant not far upwind.

Work’s central musical reference is Weather Report’s “Palladium,” a piece with cult status in the USSR, eponymous with the physical element that one day might make cold fusion possible.

Threading geo-political and historical coordinates through music and semi-fictional post-mortem narrative purposefully collapses linear understanding of time. Critically embracing transmigration as an operational mode, the Cemetery of Melodies Alive establishes a sonic memorial, moaning the consequences of war in Ukraine. The work alerts the listener of the imminent danger of the destruction of the ninth-largest nuclear power plant in the world and the largest one in Europe. 

The three-channel sound installation explores the acoustic properties of the Doppler effect, revolving frequencies, waves, narratives and silences around the audience. An imaginative playground for ghosts and auditory hallucinations, the Cemetery of Melodies Alive prompts the audience to engage in critical practice after the breaking point.

The resilience of ghosts reminds the listener to re-silence towards certain music devoid of fixed meanings and solutions, with many melodies as means of breathing life into an ever-evolving political present.

This show is special in expanding anti-racist perspectives and suggesting possibilities for direct solidarity work, listening and breaking white silence. This show listens to the body to metabolise stuck emotional responses and as part of the ongoing struggle for social justice.  Finally, this Concrete Listening Show will remind us to listen to our blessings and walk our purpose.

In this stream of appearances this show will be joined by educator, writer and activist Paul Kive; artist, facilitator, consultant and curator Camille Sapara Barton; social worker, somatic movement therapist and scholar/activist Rae Johnson and last but not least the infamous poet Basta Rhymes.

This show is special in celebrating the second anniversary of ILYICH's residency at Refuge Worldwide.

This show listens to "that fine space between desire and always the grave" and recalls the moment of finally being able to hear Sun Ra. It listens to the wind as music, cosmology, and architecture, and reminds us to listen to our inner voice while keeping our intent intact.

In this stream of appearances, this show will be transmitting the voices of the writer, professor, philosopher, intersectional feminist, poet and civil rights activist Audre Lorde; jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and percussionist John Gilmore; filmmaker, writer, literary theorist, composer, and professor Trinh T. Minh-ha and last but not least the infamous extraterrestrial, musician and poet Col. Bruce Hampton from the Aquarium Rescue Unit will join the show.

This anniversary episode is also special as it celebrates the release and first collaboration between ILYICH and celebrated African House DJ and Refuge Worldwide Resident Floyd Lavine. In keeping with this soulful and jazzy track with a highlight feel, this Concrete Listening Show will focus on sharing songs filled with poetry and voices including Laura Mvula, Khadja Bonet, and Emma-Jean Thackray among many others.

This show is special in that it suggests deeper ways of hearing. It listens to the apparent silence of the archives and the potential of prison abolition, reminding us to stay whimsical, to add sugar to the broth, and to remember that listening is the simplest form of meditation.

In this stream of appearances, this show is joined by the voices of John Gillmore, an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and percussionist; and Ruth Wilson Gilmore, a prison abolitionist and prison scholar. Vaginal Davis, a performing artist, painter, independent curator, composer, filmmaker, and writer, and Samaneri Jayasara a Buddhist nun in the Theravadin Forest Tradition.

Listening Hymns is a performative spoken word archive that invites you to explore the practice of listening through the voices of artists, musicians, poets, writers, educators, athletes, meditators, and activists.

Listening Hymns celebrates the worlds of listening through sonic and somatic practices, culture and politics, anti-fascism, critical practice/theory, spirituality, intersectional feminism, and community building, among other disciplines. The archive is shared through radio shows, university lectures, sound meditations, listening sessions, exhibitions, and musical performances under the many names of the artist. The ever-growing choir of voices is playfully performed at Refuge Worldwide through ILYICH's artist residency, interwoven with live DJ performances augmented by samplers, sound modules, percussion, readings, and occasional guests in the radio booth.

This episode is special in that it features the voices of recently ascended poet, writer, and goddess Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr; bassist Oteil Burbridge; poet David Whyte; journalist and author Krista Tippet; anthropologist, feminist, queer and race theorist Roshanak Kheshti; saxophonist and composer Brandford Marsails; mixing engineer Andrew Sheps; and last but not least, legendary athlete and underrated contemporary philosopher Mike Tyson.

This show reminds us of the art of generous listening, of the presence of race and gender in the listener's imagination, of infinite attention, and shares a clear direction when you feel lost in the woods.

ILYICH is a musician and storyteller reincarnated in Kherson, Ukraine.

Augmenting music performances with performance art ILYICH pilots full sound of electronic music through soul and jazz. Fusing synthesisers, drum machines, string orchestras, live bass and choirs ILYICH shares otherworldly stories of struggle and resolution told from multiple first-person narratives.

In high resonance with dancers and nerds, ILYICH is known for their live music releases with the Nervous Records and the Lot Radio in New York; Gilles Peterson and the BBC 6 Music Radio Rotation; unearthly performances at the Roskilde and Fusion Festivals and discursive occurrences at the Galleries, Museums and cultural spaces including the Serpentine Galleries in London; Sonic Acts in Amsterdam, SAVVY Contemporary, Centre for Contemporary Arts and House of the World Cultures in Berlin among others.

After leaving Ukraine as a refugee in the late 1990s the middle name ILYICH disappears from the artist’s papers and reappears as a semi-fictional persona during the contemporary art exhibition documenta14, in Athens in 2017. ILYICH’s elusive origin and fluid identity, their sound, music and stories encourage imaginative exploration and challenge contemporary forms of marginalisation processes on Earth. Committed to developing artistic responses in the form of musical concerts, interactive sonic sculptures, and learning sites ILYICH is motivated to momentarily disrupt identitarian, fascistic, and hyper-individualised constructions of the self that separate us. ILYICH is the initiator of the Grounded Outer Space People, a nomadic artist residency/music ensemble tracing the relationship between transmigration and music and the host of the Concrete Listening Show at the Refuge Worldwide Radio synthesizing words spoken by musicians and artists intuitively connected through jazz, soul, house, electronic, experimental, and improvisation-based music.
