“Persuasion” examines the relationship between growing older and finding novelty in new and unexpected terrain. Inspired by recent readings, a reconnection with nature, and a new baby boy on the horizon, these tracks evoke a specific time and place in my life. Uncertainty has been a through line for quite some time now and I sought to use that tension to probe how it could be affected and altered by the tools at my disposal. The balance of tight breaks and vast, reverted pads created an atmosphere that captures how I’ve been feeling. A sense of melancholy and escapism, but broken up by moments of hope, discovery, and elation.

Dedicated to my wife Devon, an endless source of radiant positivity and affirmation.

Emerging from a misty Florida jungle, long-time duo Alien House step in with their much-anticipated LP ‘Flora’. An album that floats along like a spiritual awakening, ‘Flora’ sits in the multiplicity of several electronic genres and stylings while maintaining a sound completely its own. Following the success of their Above EP with Image Research in 2021, their latest offering takes us even further into the depths of their flourishing sound.

Brilliantly subtle and nuanced, each track unfolds like a blossoming flower under moonlit canopies. The synth work is gentle and emotive while the percussion hits like raindrops on lush forest leaves. The spaciousness and vastness of reverb-soaked melodies and chords ease the listener into meditative states while the drum sequences keep everything grounded and pulsing. Hovering above the hazy sheen of Los Angeles sits a prism of refracted light and mysterious energy. This is where we find ‘Phosphor’, the latest collection of songs from LA-based producer/wizard Glo Phase.

Through various sonic explorations, Glo Phase has been distilling their sound meticulously over numerous releases including his standout ‘Early Moments’ on 100% Silk in 2021. ‘Phosphor’ opens the same doors of cosmic perception even further. Chromatic synth structures stand like statues on vast technicolor dreamscapes. Swinging, tumbling percussion deepens the flow as grooving, milky bass lines pour over top. Every sound vaguely familiar, a lost recollection, flickering in and out of the frame. Yet, there is still something so undeniably fresh and emotive about these tracks, blending comfort with the unknown.

Justin Depth is the moniker of artist and co-label head of Image Research, Justin Myers. As a catch-all for his many different creations as producer and performer, his sound has touched on a near-infinite array of electronic sounds like IDM, ambient, drone, techno, broken-beat, downtempo, and many others. As 1/2 of the duo Alien House, he has also helped lay the foundation for a prolific output, most notably their most recent album ‘You’, a stunning display that exists in the cross-sections of futurist-leaning electronica.

Amidst a cloud of digital one-offs and concept-driven collected works, emerges the first physical Justin Depth offering to date, ‘Wired’. Akasha System crafts their signature sounds into a slowed-down lullaby, perfect for a twilight evening stroll through nature. Fog surrounds you as you float into the swamp and become enveloped by creatures of the night.

Ritual synthesist Severed+Said’s haunting yet soothing harmonies draw you deeper into the night with sparkling tones floating through the air atop a minimalist beat. You enter a trance and become one with the evolving melody.

The London underground house scene is vast and plentiful when it comes to bedroom producers and wide-eyed DJs. Many flicker and fade out, lost in the constant cycle of releases, events, and one-off collaborations.

Stealth-like, but incredibly consistent, Memphis Glass has withstood the waves of an ever-changing scene, bringing forth his own style to a crowded genre. A tasteful ear for melody and classic house rhythms are at the core of his sound, apparent in a growing back catalog of EPs, singles, and 12”s.

On his debut EP with Image Research, ‘We Don’t Need Much’ fills the room with introspective dance floor bliss. 4 tracks that showcase what the producer does best; outsider house that’s as fresh as it is timeless. IR020 - Memphis Glass - We Don't Need Much - We Don't Need Much

4 years ago, Portland’s Well Being joined forces with Image Research to release their single “Soft Mood” as part of the ‘Origins’ compilation. 

Since then, the output has been quiet. This is no surprise, considering a release from the artist is a seemingly rare event. A slow trickle of singles and EPs has been the artist's MO right from the start, keeping the moniker and process shrouded in mystery and obscurity. 

As a longtime friend of the label, murmurs of a release were always on the table, but flickered and faded out as quickly as they began. So when the opportunity presented itself to pin down 2 deep and elusive WB cuts, IR jumped on the opportunity. 

‘Enshrined’ circles back to Well Being’s signature fluid, nutrient-rich house sound. Ecologically charged textures and rhythms burst with alchemic levels of precision. Quenching the mind with clouds of euphoric vibration. Out-of-body music that transports and enlightens, falling like cool crystal droplets on warm stone.

Demi O (one of many monikers by the cryptic producer Samsuo) is one such artist whose work is constantly and quietly evolving. His newest collection of tracks, ‘Now & Then’ takes us further into the mysterious mind behind it all. Deep and dusty samples against propulsive house rhythms paint serene nighttime visions of lonesome walks that recall bittersweet memories—hazed-out black light rooms filled with the air of uncertainty and change. Poetically charged but always grounded and physically aware. Tracks that will lead you out into twilight and guide you back home again, safe and sound.

DJ Stepdad returns to Image Research with an unreleased track that has been tucked away since 2022.

Deep, lush, and meditative, the track ebbs and flows through misty caverns. Pillowy synth chords and distant, serene pedal steel lay gently on crisp rhythms and buzzy bass as bird calls ring out softly in the background. A blissed-out sunrise that balances out the midnight wooziness of DJ STEPDAD's 2-track “the hits with DJ CLUB”. Idyllic and optimistic, it inherently compliments and completes the triptych of tracks, pushing another boundary for the artists and hinting at horizons ahead.

Portland producer Hunter Thompson's latest LP offering as Akasha System is both a distillation of and divergence from his elegantly illusory eco-tronica. Inspired by extensive desert treks up and down the West Coast, the album's nine tracks sway and shimmer like horizon line mirages, enigmas of motion and distance, wavy and widescreen: Geomind.

Thompson cites scenes of “desolate terrain, spectrum sunrises, and strange sightings in the vastness of the sky” as mood board reference points, which translate in the album's spaciousness and surreality, sculpting glassy synthetic currents into rhythmic voyages of futurist melancholy.
