In loving memory and celebration of Reed Smith. 

Putting this set together for Reed's Celebration of Life was a journey. I put off working on it for a while because I wasn't quite there yet - I wasn't ready to celebrate. When I finally started to put the playlist together, I sifted through his most recent Spotify playlists and recommendations sent over from friends of songs that reminded them of him - the grief process was accelerated and took me on a ride. 

Tears of loss, but then laughter at the silly ridiculousness and eclectic collage of seemingly unrelated songs. Reed's library was perfectly reflective of who he is. Real. Unapologetic. Bodly authentic. Pure human expression. They are songs that make you feel something - whether that be Lane 8's melodic and moving beats, Cindy Lauper's totally cornball 'Time after Time', cumbia songs representing his self-identified Mexican heritage, or gangsta rap that was raw and intense. All of these songs, in no particular order - just there in a chaotic pile of emotions. An expression of human life. 

So many of us bounce between hiding from our emotions and trying to make sense of them - Reed just felt them, all of them. Expressed them boldly. Accepted the chaos, or rather embraced the chaos, of what it means to be human.

Of all emotions, Reed is love. He reminds us of the power of unconditional compassion. Loving from a place of authenticity. Of unapologetically wearing your heart on your sleeve. That being compassionate actually means being true to yourself and others - allowing others to see their truth.

On the days that I worked on this set, I sat and meditated with Reed. I asked for his support and for him to speak through me. Sometimes we felt so connected and chatted back and forth. One time I asked for him to give me a song, and he gave me the song "World of Colors" at minute 85. I thanked him and asked for another, and he remixed Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time" over it. I laughed and went to my computer to try it out - they were in the exact same key! Reed had been working with me throughout the process - I'd get chills when he wanted a song in the set. It is eclectic, meaningful, ridiculous, and full of love. 

Love you so much Reed <3 I look forward to more of these moments when we connect through the veils and for all the magic we create.
