Instrumental version of the theme to the classic Nintendo game Mike Tyson's Punchout. I hope you like it!

On Feb. 20, 2012, Precious Reed, a 31-year-old father of four and ordained minister, was shot dead in the parking lot of the lawn bowling area of Seattle's Woodland Park. Reed and a friend went to the park to buy several pounds of marijuana, but the drug deal was a setup to rob Reed of more than $1,000 in cash.

Requiem

Dusk crept over the desert as we turned off the highway onto a dirt road that skirted the edge of Mono Lake. I reread the hand-written instructions we'd been given. "Drive over three cattle guards, then take your next left." It wasn't clear if the cattle guard bordering the highway counted as the first one. Miles later, though, with dust protesting our windshield and darkness gathering, we found the edge of the deserted field. 

The gate was marked by a weather-worn bandana, its original color lost long ago to time and neglect.  We parked a few yards away, shut off the engine, and sat and listened to the silence, broken only by the pinging of the cooling car and the creak of an old rusty chain, swaying in the wind.

The evening cooled suddenly as we opened the gate and began the lengthy trek to the hot spring.  The last dusky glow of sunset gave way to appearance of the first stars, and the sky turned its deepest shades of blue.  Near the bottom of a valley we arrived at the steaming pool of water, hidden away under an outcrop of sandstone, its silent vapor wisping into the night.  Everywhere was inky black, each star in the universe visible. The Milky Way splashed a great arc across the sky. 

Wordlessly we slipped into the spring.

We soaked our bodies and nourished our souls. We listened to the sky, and the rustling grass, and the gentle breezes nestling against the sagebrush. And as we did, the gentle waves of the pool quieted, and the reflections of distant planets and moons settled on the calmed surface. We held our breath, and for some moments the stars descended from their constellations to play. Meteors shooting across the sky caused tiny ripples as they skipped over the water, celestial stones flung from the firmament, hopping and dancing at the edge of the earth. 

We stayed as long as we could, but we couldn't stay forever. The next morning's ascent to the ridges of the eastern Sierras would begin much earlier than hoped, and a good night's rest was needed.  We gathered our things and hiked back to the gate and our car. Far behind us, the now-empty spring continued steaming, undisturbed, and late into the night.
