10 FREE RADIO IMAGING SOUND EFFECTS

This was fun! A challenge to create a track purely from distorted voices. I had a bunch of vocal samples laying around so I thought, why not?

I used all inbuilt Ableton effects; starting with the whispers, reversed, and adding a filter delay. 
Then the 'drums' - a chopped up sample, with 'loop off beat' and 'brute compression' added. This was hard to mix!
The more natural 'ooo' has a phaser (phased and confused)
The glitchy, trebl-y squeak and the deep bass are that same 'ooo' transposed way up/way down.

It's the half term school holidays in the UK this week, I'm sitting at home with two young kids and I read this email from Naviar for the Haiku challenge as it pops into my inbox.  I love the image this haiku creates. Outside my window at home we have tree branches that are winter bare. I was filming these the other day for another project. 
I had an idea for the music straight away - a 'bare' sort of sound to reflect the image of branches.  I started on this straight away. The kids are happy playing so I progressed and made this in about 2 hours. 

Birds in a bare tree
Dance on windswept branches
Their waiting ballet…

John Hinks, aka FlownBlue, is a prolific and talented composer, and a regular participant in the Haiku challenge. Their previous drummer threw his toys from out of the pram on October 2nd 2020...by midday October 3rd they'd recruited old friend and all round legend Tom Anning as the new powerhouse percussion department for The Zenn Diagram live shows.

It took a few weeks of cat herding until the boys could all get together for the first time in a rehearsal studio, and thanks to lockdowns and plague-related uncertainties they've not managed it again since, but this snippet from the session shows there's plenty to look forward to from The Zenn Diagram, if the human race can avert the apocalypse.

Tom C fills in some background on the new addition to The Zenn:
"I've known Tom [A] since primary school; we lived in adjacent villages, went to the same primary school and got into rock music at the same time.  We've played in various bands together over the years, including NosDonkey Presents and Pheremone High, but in the late-90s we formed our first proper "originals" band: Another Enemy.  I played guitar and tried to sing, whilst you may be surprised to hear Tom A played Bass!  However, we've both always played drums too, so when the drum stool became free for Zenn Tom was a natural choice.  

This recording is of course exceptionally rough around the edges, but that's the way we like it: true to the grunge spirit! The PA system in the rehearsal studio we used at that point was, to put it as politely as possible, one of the most wretchedly turgid crocks of shit ever to be foisted upon a musician, and on that occasion when we arrived it was in bits around the room, so I was a raging, discombobulated ball of fury by the time we got around to actually playing.  Toby and I hadn't played together in weeks, and to add to my many handicaps that day I arrived at rehearsal without a single one of the three guitars I'd intended to bring, so had to borrow Toby's...lovely instrument but light as a feather, even compared to my usual Gibson SGs!!!  

Anyway, we cracked the fuck on and were pleasantly surprised by how easily things came together in the circumstances.  Tom and I share a sensibility for grunge and indie from the 90s anyway, and I think that comes across in the way we play together, anticipating the dynamic changes and punctuation required to make the songs really come to life.

I chose Happy as a taster from the session for a number of reasons.  Firstly, there's a raw power to the performance (the first take by the way, right in at the deep end) that I never really felt properly materialised with the previous incarnation of Zenn; Tom doesn't have any fear, he doesn't complain or procrastinate, he just launches at each song and gives them each his all, regardless of whether it's a live situation or a rehearsal, and that really lifts Toby and I to give a bit more too.

Secondly, I wrote Happy around about 1995 for Another Enemy, so Tom and I know it inside out and even though he didn't play drums on it back then (that was the job of absolute maestro-genius percussion wizard jazzman Jamie Robertson) he still knows how the song should feel, particularly the slightly wonky time signature in the choruses.  It brought a huge grin to my angry face playing Happy with Tom again after so long...yes the lyrics are full of teen angst, adolescent confusion and pubescent yearnings, but all these years later I'm full of adult angst, jaded confusion, and all manner of existential yearnings, so the underlying notions of the song still stand up, to my mind at least!

And thirdly I really enjoy the extremely extended guitar solo...if only you could see the gurning faces and tortured looks of my bandmates as they tried to keep it together during my self-indulgence!!!  Hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed thrashing it out; the studio version will be on our forthcoming album, stay tuned (that's an order, not the name of the album, although...)"
