This playlist includes a selectiion of tracks from Imam Baildi's two albums -'Imam Baildi' (2008) & 'The Imam Baildi Cookbook' (2011), plus 'Argosvineis Moni', the first single from their upcoming album, 'Imam Baildi III', to be released July 2014 in Greece.

Fresh new track, a combination of RnB beats, cifteteli, a Greek/Turkish rhythm, hip-hop / ragga flows from BnC and MC Yinka (in order of appearance) and vocals from Rena Morfi. Some moombahton there, too. Based on 'Chorepse mou tsifteteli', a 1950's track originally sung by Roza Eskenazy, composed bu G. Manisalis. 

BAILA CIFTETELI - 2012 Version

This is track no. 9 on our first album 'Imam Baildi'. It is a remix from a 1930's rembetiko tune by Stelios Keromytis. The lyrics are about a guy saying he likes his girl because she dresses like an 'arhodissa' (classy lady) while on the same time she  'drinks like an old drunkard' and 'smokes like a touch guy'. That's the first remix we did, back in 2005.

Xena Heria is track no 7 in our first album 'Imam Baildi'. The samples come from two 1960's tunes by Vassilis Tsitsanis.

Poso Lypamai is track no. 9 in our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). Samples come from the homonymous 1930's track sung by Sofia Vembo. The track was originally a valse, but we used a 4/4 hiphop beat and added some instrumental parts.

This is track no. 6 in our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a remix of a classic rembetiko tune, by Markos Vamvakaris. The lyrics describe a guy asking his girl to wake up, open her window and listen to him singing. 

To Minore tis Avgis

This is track no 1 from our first album 'Imam Baildi; (2007). It's a remix from a 1930's tune sung by Sofia Vembo. We used the acapella intro to the song and incorporated it in a reggae / dub orchestration.

I zoi mas einai ligi

Pasatempos is track no.4 in our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a remix of a 1940's rembetiko tune, composed by Manolis Chiotis. The lyrics are about a guy saying his girl treats him like a pasatempos (that's a snack Greeks eat while doing something else, sort of the way you eat pop-corn). He says, you just use me to pass your time (pasa tempo) when in reality you're after someone else and you just use me as backup to make the other guy jealous. And he concludes: leave me if you like, but please just don't let the other guy know that you treated me like this. (which, by the way, totally defeats the stereotype of macho Greek guys, and rightly so...)

O Pasatempos

This is track no.2 in our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a remix of a 1950's Manolis Chiotis track. 'De thelo pia na xanartheis' means 'I don't want you to come back any more', because you'll make me think of all the nice times we had.

Samba Clarina is track no 2 on our first album 'Imam Baildi' (2007). It's a mix of gypsy clarinet melodies and samba beats, very danceable (we think). DJ Panko has also remixed the track, this is the original album version.

Busca Ritmo is track no 2 in our new album 'The Imam Baildi Cookbook' (Dec '07). It features Ives from Delinquent Habits &amp; MC Yinka. The bouzouki theme comes from 'Ti sou 'kana kai m' egateleipses' a tune of Yiorgos Zabetas.

Carantino Manouche

Samples from “Akrogialies Deilina” (i.e. Beaches – Sunsets) recorded by Tsitsanis in 1948. The singer is Stella Haskil. Given the ‘exotic’ feel of the original track, we thought it would sound nice to arrange it in 1950’s big band / mambo style.

Akrogialies Dilina

Remix of the homonymous 1950’s track by Manolis Chiotis, also known as ‘Bolero’ (the title ‘thlipsi’ means ‘sorrow’). Vocals by Mary Linda. Chiotis’ perception of latin music is so essential that it makes one wonder whether he was actually born into that music. This probably explains why the brass theme we added, which originally comes from an old Puertorican tune, sounds as if it was actually written for this track.

Remix of the 1972 homonymous track composed by Manuel Alejandro and recorded by Salah Ragab’s Cairo Jazz Band. Rhymes by Lady Faye and BnC.

Egypt Strut (Imam Baildi Remix)

Vocals: Eleni Tsaligopoulou, rhymes: Eisvoleas.

Music and lyrics based on the original 1935 track. The lyrics are about a nargile (hookah) that goes out each time a girls tries to smoke. The girl interprets that as a sign that her lover is not satisfied by her. Eisvoleas came up with the idea to combine the track with hip hop rhymes about hash (and love) and Eleni sang the original lyrics.


Argile Mou Giati Svinis

 Hasaposerviko is, generally speaking,  a traditional dance on a 2/4 beat. This one comes from northern Greece and is usually played by Balkan brass bands. We did a dub version of the tune.
