This mix soundtracks my essay "Contents Under Pressure: A (Queer) Techno Manifesto," published in the December 2022 special issue of e-flux on BLACK RAVE guest co-edited with McKenzie Wark.

BLACK RAVE

DJ Nalule is a Canadian DJ, visual artist and aspiring acupuncturist who currently is based in "Vancouver'' (Unceded Coast Salish Territories). Born in Kampala, Uganda, Vancouver-raised she has been classically trained as a pianist since age five. She has played at many of Vancouver's underground raves & has demonstrated she is a creative force to be reckoned with within the city and beyond.  DJ Nalule oscillates between a myriad of genres ranging from breakbeat, juke, bass, uk funky/garage, jungle , techno, tribal and world. Her sets are highly syncopated, dynamic and emotive meant to enchant listeners as they are taken on a transcendental ride. Nalule cites black rave culture as a primary source of inspiration for her mixes.

We paired Basha’s mix with a 2018 work by Sirous Namazi titled "Unfolded." Namazi was born in Kerman, Iran, and came to Sweden at the age of fifteen. Recurring themes in his art are erased memories, forgetfulness, sight and time. The metaphors informing his work could to some extent be said to revolve around our fragility and the multiple definitions of “home.” We think both Namazi and Basha, while distinct in their own lanes and stories, resonate across these themes: how does home travel? How does it fit in your pocket, your heart, and your headphones? And, maybe most importantly, how can it be shared with others?

This was an opportunity I used to embrace where I fall along the spectrum of femininity in balance to masculine energy. A feminine essence provided foundation by that of a male born body of sound. Having just gotten home from my first honcho campout I was eager to land home and begin feeding off this abundance of inspiration, I decided to depict a particular recent experience of my own. I first caught Sapph playing a Pillow Princess party they threw at Tuxedo with Chanel and knew we had needed them as part of our series. They took the stage and owned a crowd of a hungry crowd of club goers like a seasoned performer and it was a great portender of their skills. These are all tough to write cause its basically me (madeofants, Nick writes these too but I'm a lot more vulnerable) saying how much I love everyone's taste and how cool I think they are in different (hopefully) creative ways.
