Crafting a singular cinematic approach on mental electronic music, Elijah (@projekt-am) is a french artist based on the mediteranean coast. Through his mixes and productions, Elijah explores scheming rythms and abstract though detailed and largely textured landscapes. Releasing other peoples music since 2017 through his own label @lemme-records, he is also involved in his local community as 1/3 of @extend-play – a DJ trio operating in Marseille that used to run the Basement parties, a monthly and intimate gathering for deeper grooves enthusiasts.
 
In this episode Elijah shared his audio perception of the Transpolar Drift across a beautiful and contemplative selection of tracks.

≋  Why did you choose this theme ? 

Elijah: I originally thought about another theme, more local, more solar. Then, while digging tracks for the podcast and trying to combine them, I thought it sounded more like a puzzle where the pieces touched each other. All of them werent embedded, but linked by something still.

≋  What pictures were brought to your imagination when preparing this episode ?

Elijah : Due to the cold and wobbly atmosphere of some tracks, I thought about unstable pieces of sea ice colliding and drifting, all of them connected by one thing : the ocean. The puzzle became a chunky sea ice drifting on the Arctic Ocean form East to West by a current called Transpolar Drift. This is the story of these broken pieces of ice shelf - more or less huge - travelling with this current and of the life that can happen above and below it.

The Transpolar Drift is a major surface current in the Arctic Ocean, transporting sea ice and waters across the North Pole from the northern coast of Siberia towards Greenland. As the Beaufort Gyre (a roughly circular current flowing clockwise within the surface waters of the Beaufort Sea in the western or North American Arctic), the movement of the Transpolar Drift is the result of large-scale atmospheric circulation dominated by a high-pressure centre over the western Arctic Ocean. The pattern is not constant but varies in both strength and position about every decade or so, as the high-pressure centre weakens and moves closer to both Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. Together, the Beaufort Gyre and Transpolar Drift strongly influence the Arctic Ocean ice thickness distribution.

Sea ice is an important transport vehicle for gaseous, dissolved and particulate matter in the Arctic Ocean. Due to the recently observed acceleration in sea ice drift, more matter is advected by the Transpolar Drift from shallow shelf waters to the central Arctic Ocean and beyond. However, intensified melt in the marginal zones of the Arctic Ocean interrupts the transarctic conveyor belt and has led to a reduction of the survival rates of sea ice exported from the shallow Siberian shelves. As a consequence, less and less ice formed in shallow water areas has reached Fram Strait, and more ice and ice-rafted material is released in the northern Laptev Sea and central Arctic Ocean. A reduced long-range transport of sea ice alters transport and redistribution of climate relevant gases, and increases accumulation of sediments and contaminates in the central Arctic Ocean, with consequences for primary production, and the biodiversity of the Arctic Ocean.
