To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of our first gig (4th Dec 2014 at the Union Hotel, Newtown) we present a bootleg phone recording of Imperial Broads live. This was recorded at a mini festival at the Factory theatre in Marrickville on 11th Feb 2018 where we played downstairs at the Factory Floor. We're uploading three songs from an untamed and wildly fast nine song set. The tracks you hear here are 'Understudy' (from Who are we turning into?), Socioplath, and We Need This (both from Counterpart).

Imperial Broads are a noisy, deranged, pop explosion led by three singer-songwriters who work together to make a delightfully raucous, urgent, and melodic sound. What started out as three girls in a garage learning to play guitar in the dead of winter, with ambitious ideas of making harmony-packed punk music, has developed into the strange but catchy combo of distortion and groove created by Pip Smith, Eve Lande and Lauren Crew. 

Nick Kennedy joined the band on drums and by late 2016 they released their debut record, Who Are We Turning Into?, recorded with Liam Judson over one week earlier that year, on a walnut farm in Oberon.
The release received support from community radio nationally and strong support from Triple J unearthed with glowing reviews from Triple J staff Max Quinn, Dave Ruby Howe and Gemma Pike describing the music as “Snappy but gritty, poppy but scrappy”, “Another ripper!” and “Charming and suuuper pretty”.

Renowned For Sound raved their subsequent live shows packed "a powerful set of tunes that saw doo-wop pop and punk collide" and Underground Stage said their songs are “like an edged weapon, glinty and threatening, but are wielded with skill and a thoroughly demented grin. It slices through you in all the good ways.”

After touring the debut album along the East Coast with Richard Cuthbert, Imperial Broads joined a slew of local festival lineups including Bad Day Out, Freedom Festivals 2 & 3, Sad by Sad West and Sydney Psych Fest where they played alongside the likes of La Luz, Straight Arrows, The Gooch Palms, Middle Kids, Body Type, Felix Lush, Julia Why?, Kikagaku Moyo, New Candys, Glitoris amongst many more local and international acts. 

In the following years, the band explored their sound on Sydney stages, trying new songs, new guitars, and generally having a great time in Australia’s incredible indie music scene. 

Counterpart, Imperial Broads’ sophomore album, is full of this curiosity, determination, and love of music. Its creation was as complex and varied as the songs captured on this 12 track LP. With some songs recorded hot on the heels of their debut release, writing and recording then continued on for years in stolen moments of time at whatever locations were available. The slow brew of this record, while big moments in life took their place, has only added to the distinct sound and bolder song-writing offered up on Counterpart. The band are proud to present a collection of songs, masterfully produced by Liam Judson, that reflect a varied range of sonic influences and personal experiences, as one rich, cohesive whole.

'Unromantic', the band's first single of 2021, reintroduced the band to fans and found new followers amid widespread radio airplay on both FBi and 2SER in Sydney. Counterpart, their forthcoming second LP, promises to be the stunning sonic culmination of Imperial Broads' musical, creative, and life experiences.
