lena andersson is a fictional character created by berlin-based japanese artist kyoka and irish producer eomac. both met in 2016 during a residency at the stockholm EMS studios. the initial spark of their collaboration was a joint session on the studio's buchla system, later expanding to multiple other sound sources and instruments at sessions in the etopia studio in zaragoza supported by fuga.

during the improvisations, a call-and-response working principle emerged immediately which joins the special talents of both musicians. kyoka's free and experimental approach forms part of the source material that is contrasted with eomac's skillful editing; unconventional reflections face a driving force. from kyoka's extensive field recording collection, an arabesque of disturbing vocal fragments arises that is set against eomac's hard rhythmic framework, as in »das tier«, for instance. »37 years later« or »mystic« live on a vivid texture that has been condensed directly at the mixing console into a kind of dramaturgical capturing of the moment. the immediacy of the collaboration forms the basis for a synergy of the individual production techniques. a strategy that lacks neither absolute creative freedom nor an awareness of musical function.

»söder mälarstrand« thus captures an intuitive cooperation between the two producers, which also refers back to the place of origin through its dialogical, moment-related production principle. the album title is a tribute to the stockholm studios where the project began.

After last year saw the launch of the Stages of Grief series on Vaknar via its maiden release Convalescence, the second volume presented here will focus on the theme of consolation and is thus aptly titled Solace. Once more a variety of artists were selected to respond to the theme. Solace begins with an uplifting chorus of synth laden resonances, bellowing throughout the duration of ‘Lonely Cloud’ by Danish native Rune Bagge, who made waves via his debut LP which was released on Northern Electronics last year.

Previous Vaknar collaborators White Stains (Belgium), Appropriate Savagery (France) and Amethyst (Germany) further divulge in a certain sonic spectrum and mood that encompasses the entire A side of the release. The B side is inhabited by two contrasting compositions, starting with a piece by American composer J. Carter titled The Collapse of the Cheekbone is the Death of the Comité de salut public. Here the listener is presented with a solemn gust of layered keys which steadily develop in dramatic fashion before bursting into a hurl of feedback that over-tones the proclamations of a muffled voice. J. Carter’s piece presents itself as the peak of a tumultuous phase of grievance and thus the following and final composition on the release ends on an contrastingly tranquil note, presented by Swedish composer Isorinne, who shares a nine minute long composition of pure, virtuous serenity that commemorates the arrival of a new stage, (which will be further explored throughout the third and final instalment in the series next year).

Each cassette comes housed in a unique, hand cut J-Card, derived from a variation of B&W screen prints specifically created for the Stages of Grief Series at an Edition of 50.

This split release between ELEH and NYZ (David Burraston) is packaged in a heavy duty sleeve printed on both sides of the packaging and utilizing metallic inks. This is a first edition of 500 copies and a brand new full length from NYZ is being released at the same time via Important Records.

ELEH: This side is possibly the artist's most complicated electronic composition. It navigates myriad timbral, tuning and temporal processes while winding itself to completion. It was composed/constructed over a period of months in early 2019.

NYZ: Two crunchy microtonal drone meditations in mono, using techniques of digital FM and hybrid analogue/digital modular synthesis. FM60P::fbk1#03 is from a number of sessions recorded on my very battered SY99 recorded from 2013 to 2014. As the name suggests, this particular session revolved around using feedback in the FM algorithm. EML DRNPi was recorded as part of the 2015 Plum Island Sessions where I had a host of synths on loan from John Brien at Important Records. For this recording I used the EML ElectroComp 101 and my own 4 voice digital microtonal oscillator running a Lambdoma Matrix to make a hybrid analogue/digital system.

God Bless the Death Drive could be construed as a compass to navigate the wayward wonder we inhabit or it can just be enjoyed. This second full length steers into scathed realms of everyday junk and poignant punk, all pressed down on the lowest quality ethylene and chlorine.

ELEH's Harmonic Twins is a slow moving monophony tuned to the overtone vocalizations generated by a particularly beautiful sound sculpture made by Harry Bertoia.

These two pieces are inspired by early music, choral masses, motets, the cathedral reverberations of sacred geometry and deep bass. Harmonic Twins was originally debuted by ELEH at Unsound, Krakow in 2017. 

An optimal listening environment is recommended in order to experience the low frequencies of Harmonic Twins.

Ricardo Donoso's latest release for Denovali is a dark, noisy, and aggressive piece, and whereas sometimes I would find this type of music to be a little more intrusive, I think that at this moment it is timely and on point. I'm starting to get a little vexed with our situation. And it's not because of isolation or the mindless flat routine. I'm getting irked with all the streaming from all platforms, with staring into someone's room for days on end, with adverts promising to help connect me to people, and with the output as inspired by this mess. And so, Donoso's music is a salvage, with scratching sounds, foreboding noisescapes, and post-techno beats. The seeping doom, the menacing expansion, and the organic clamour all fit on the page of his atonal work. And if you listen to this track premiere and follow through a quote behind the concept of his latest album, you'll understand the cure for the ongoing toil.

Terry Waite was taken hostage in Beirut in the late 1980s, before ISIS, before smartphones, before the Internet as we know it. He endured a mock execution during the first year of his five-year captivity, which was spent mostly in solitary confinement. Years later, during a Q&A session, he was asked to identify the main thing he had learned from his ordeal. The answer, came as a shock—it was not the excruciatingly hard-won appreciation for life and loved ones that one expects to hear. “Contemporary humanity,” declared Waite, “has lost the ability to engage in productive solitude.”
