Today’s first act is Smetnja, a Belgrade based collaborative duo formed by Minor Adjustments records co-owners - Bolelee and Lil Taty. They are mainly focused on making club music on the machines, field-recordings and ambient pieces.

Cassette edition of 100 via Cassauna/Imprec

The Buchla 100 experimental session begins with a documentary recording of the noise generators. Something I find endlessly fascinating is listening to different noise sources, so I always feel compelled to record them. The remaining tracks are sequenced by my MANIAC Cellular Automata sequencer. First up are three little sequenced ditties that also incorporate the ARP 2600 modular interconnected to the Buchla 100. After this is an ultra-minimal setup using MANIAC and the mind-numbingly rare Waveform Synthesizer Model 132 module. As far as I'm aware this is the only one of these modules that Buchla ever built! A truly unique module where you have 32 pots that setup the output waveform, and an FM input as well.. The last two tracks are a Cellular Automata / FM crossmod oscillator stereo setup, lots of crunchy high pitched stuff with some deep bass notes thrown in too :]

NYZ - BUCHLA - WAVEFORM - SYNTHESIZER MODEL 132+MANIAC - MILLZ EXPZ Cassette

My name is Jimmy Joe Roche and I run a label called Ultraviolet Light. Since I launched UVL in 2015 I’ve been lucky enough to put out 3 cassettes with Todd Barton and we’ve kept something “in the fire” pretty consistently for the last five years. For 2020 I asked Todd if he’d be willing to curate a compilation of Buchela players. So here we are ! 

I think the work I’ve released on UVL has kinship with the sonic richness and experimentation that I associate with instruments designed by Don Buchla. The Buchla sound, and the thought process that people bring to the instrument ( or perhaps that the instruments brings forth in them) is undeniably unique and should be celebrated and preserved. When I wrote the mission statement for UVL I included this line : UVL is “ dedicated to releasing work by artists who push sonic boundaries, emphasize experimentation, conceptualize sound as invisible sculpture and radiate mysterious energies.” I feel like you fit this description and I sincerely hope you’ll be willing to allow us to include a track of yours on this compilation.

My plan is to do a first edition of 200 and mail each participating artist 5 copies as compensation. If the first run of the tape sells out within the year I may do a second edition of 200, again mailing each artist 5 copies. So a maximum of 400 copies total. I don't do online digital sales and I don't do open editions, so the artists always know exactly what and how much I’m selling. You all, of course, maintain all rights to your work and are free to re-release the tracks at a later date but I’d ask that you please wait for the first 200 to sell out ( or about 18 months). The tapes will include digital download cards.

Track commissioned for the exhibition ‘Now Accepting Contactless - Design in a Global Pandemic’ V&A Dundee as part of a mix by David Blamey for British Earways to be played on a loop in the gallery.

A couple of months before lockdown, the housing block where Tom White lives got covered in scaffolding. Residents were left in a building veiled by translucent white netting for months on end. This composition was made in this specific urban lockdown context: the fridge whirs, birds chirp on scaffold poles, electromagnetic activity & tape loops reverberate on the eardrums, within the home and out into the world.

Composed of archive and site specific sounds.

Medina Vibrations (2020)

One of our favourite videos from OTO archive is a duo set by Makoto Oshiro and Takahiro Kawaguchi from Multitap Festival in 2014 . Embracing improvisation with a sense of mischief, the duo fill the space with motorised kinetic machines, hand-crafted instruments and a small mountain of inanimate miscellanea, transforming junk yard objects and erecting them into a hissing, buzzing and writhing rickety super structure.

Created at home on his own, Makoto has kindly presented this new work for us, rendering both the imaginative tactility and sense of wonder of his practice in hypnotic audio form:
"The sounds on this track are made by my hand-crafted instruments that I call "Kachi Kachi." They are quite simple; an electro-magnetic relay, which is an electronic component / physical switch driven by a coil and makes a "click (kachi)" sound, combined with a variable timer circuit that controls the frequency of the clicks. 

These small components are commonly displayed in front of many market stalls selling electronics in Tokyo's Akihabara area, and they are usually sold in different variations from large to small. I'm using three different types for different textures, and place them on materials that resonate such as wooden boards and boxes.

I think of them as acoustic oscillators, but at the same time, the outcome of the performance has a polyrhythmic, or parallel-rhythmic factor." - Makoto Oshiro
