After a brief hiatus, Late Night Burners re-enters the party with a fresh reissue in the Still Burning series, the first of a few that will drop throughout 2024. And again, the adventure was found close by. Roland Klinkenberg operates under many clever aliases (Simsalabim!) but arguably his biggest moment as a producer was the progressive trance tune “Inner Laugh”, which was remixed by none other than Border Community founder James Holden. And when those kinds of tunes get cross-bred with uptempo house and menacing techno, you get “SIM 01 / Trance Textures 2”. Originally released as the first record on his own Sim label in 1995, these tunes were part of the beginning of Roland’s long and illustrious career. You’ll understand it when you hear it. No remixes this time, just the four OG cuts remastered from the DAT tapes with love, respect, and tenderness.

Fostering the garage band stereotypes since his early years, Martim Tonic fell by the widely held house music. Originally from the simple guitar slaps to counter-drum hits, you can find a lot of these elements in his music.

The Portuguese-based producer makes his debut "Island Hopping" on Diversity Collective with a three-tune EP.
'Kornati opens groovin' fire, assembling a set of deep pads and its companion evocative synths. The theme 'Silba comes next, slowing down the grooves by emerging an enraged bass among its decaying hats. Wrappin' things up, 'Kornati's remix from C4STRO, delivers a downtempo re-interpretation, with an intensified layering of synth drives, in a slow-paced rhythm.

Petals in Sound makes her debut on Paille Records with a driving four-tracker. 'Always Be' provides a solid rhythmic foundation alongside soulful synths chords that widens the soundscape. This beautiful track gets a facelift courtesy of Tree Threes. Straight off the bat, the drums are driven harder, picking up the energy level while maintaining the distinctive soulful elements of the tracks. A great balance straight and deep house ready for any dance floor.
'Caipirinha' keeps the momentum going with a solid groove that is beautifully complemented by a spacey top-end and smokey vocals. Beautiful through and through. 'Our Place' makes use of atmospheric pads and synths chords alongside beautifully masked vocals that provide a floating track.

PREMIERE | Petals In Sound - Always Be [Paille Records] 2024

All musical movements require a spark to set them alight; in the case of Japanese house music, that spark was provided by the forward-thinking resident DJs of The Bank in Roppongi, Tokyo. In 1989, to celebrate the ground-breaking club’s first birthday, the venue released a 12” EP featuring first-time productions from three of its DJs, Junichi Soma, Shuji Wada and Strong Katsuya AKS Katsuya Sano.

Widely considered to be one of the first ever EP of house music produced in Japan, 1st Unit was never officially released. Instead, 500 of the 1000 copies pressed were given away at The Bank’s first birthday party, with the rest initially being sold not in local record stores, but rather the venue’s own in-house shop. Three decades on, the 12” is finally set to get its first worldwide release via Rush Hour’s Store JPN Series.

The record has its roots in The Bank’s willingness to give its ever-changing roster of DJs a free hand to play what they liked – at the time a rarity in Tokyo nightclubs, whose musical offerings usually revolved around strictly defined playlists. At The Bank in 1989, it was not only common to hear European body music and the kind of post-disco New York productions associated with Larry Levan’s sets at the Paradise Garage, but also acid house – something not offered at the time by other clubs in the city.

This cutting-edge blend of sounds, combined with the venue’s unique decor (it was modeled on the inside of a London bank, complete with a cashier’s window to take entrance fees), made The Bank a go-to spot for young party-goers, celebrities and forward-thinking Japanese musicians (Ryuichi Sakamoto was reportedly a weekly visitor).

When it came to celebrating the club’s birthday by cutting a unique record, it made sense for The Bank’s owners to turn to three of their most exciting resident DJs, who were assisted by Heigo Tani and Jun Ebi. The collective name, 1st Unit, was chosen to reflect the fact that all three resident DJs were debutants with no previous studio experience.

As this reissue proves, the music remains timeless, magical, and authentic to the sound of American house productions of the period – albeit with occasional twists,. Katsuya Sano’s EP opener, ‘I Need Love’, sounds like a twist on Larry Heard productions of the period – all jacking TR-909 drums, undulating analogue bass, dreamy JUNO synthesizer chords and evocative vocal samples.

The influence of Chicago acid house is also evident on Junichi Souma’s ‘Ubnormal Life’, whose unusual title contains what he says was an intentional misspelling. Driven forwards by restless drum machine handclaps, sweet chords and rising and falling melodic motifs, the track is an energetic and uplifting treat.

Perhaps the most influential of the three tracks at the time – within Japan at least – was Shuji Wada’s similarly misspelled ‘Endless Load’. Deeper and more melodic with a more expansive arrangement, the track’s combination of marimba-style lead lines, tribal drum patterns, dreamy chords and jazz-funk influenced bass offered a loose blueprint for the more successful and better-known Japanese deep house tracks that followed.

Following in the footsteps of the longed-for 2021 reissue of their seminal EP, ‘It’s The Life’, Detroit's very own guild of disco wizards Billy Lo - alias Billy Love, Darryl Tiggs and Darren Abrams - return to Cosmocities with their first album, ‘Billy Lo’. A flavorful bomb of soulful Motown aromas, Paradise Garage-esque suavity and shuffling house rhythms brought to a hedonistic simmer, the trio’s latest packs the kind of debonair charm and infectious funk that shall make as much damage on the dance floor as it will in the alcove.

The A-side starts off with ‘Pain’, a slice of satin-smooth house churn in true Detroit house style that engineers a fine euphony of classic piano twinkle, morning workout programming, stealth bass manoeuvres and shrill strings. The perfect scenery for Billy Love’s vocals to bloom in all their swinging sensuality. True to its name, the all-instrumental ‘Chill’ goes a further bass and drums-blazing route, all in generous synth sines and ovoid bounce, whereas ‘Let Ur Body Werk’ unfolds as a spirited, Afrofunk-tinged chugger bound for tireless boogie, focussing on Love's hypnotic vocal hoodoo, sturdy bass traction and a feast of incendiary congas sure to whip up the attendance into a frenzy at any time of the day. 

Flip it over and here’s the B-side up with some intoxicating jazz business for the late hours. Dishing out a fiery combo of space-discoid slap bass, sun-bleached piano chords and heavily filtered loops, ’Sho Me Ur Love’ is juicy entanglement in a bottle. All in slowed-down voluptuousness, the loungey bop number ‘Flavors’ reels out like a washed-out dream, vaporous and lush as it gets. Topping off the journey on a hi-NRG spin, ‘Do Ur Thang’ pulls out a playful collage of heavy-duty bass propulsion, obsessive synth motifs and ebullient pep talk sure to have you going hard all night long.

Andrés Téllez is Delone, composer, producer, and designer of sound for film and TV. He founded Riverette Records in 2014 releasing artists like Legowelt, Oskar Offermann, Minor Science, Kornel Kovacs, Jacques Renault, Tiger & Woods, HAAi and Piona. His own music went out Man Power’s ME ME ME, Turbocapitalism, Rotten City under the pseudonym Dos Attack. In 2017 Riverette opened a record store in the center of Madrid, becoming a benchmark space in the capital. In 2021 he put out his first album as Delone.
 
His new album ‘Romanticismo Siempre’ is out on Madrid based label Lovemonk and is a passionate journey through romanticism, electronica, ambient and psychedelia. Recorded for the most part on analog synths, the album travels through territories that border on the experimental and the dance floor, entering at times in both fields. Rich and varied analog experimentation, touching on many of the subcultures that have shaped what was once simply called ‘electronic music.’ Flashes of trip hop, new age romanticism and proto electronics are amalgamated throughout, with hints of mutant house, breakbeat, IDM, a touch of trance and other genres peripheral to the club.
 
Throughout the eleven cuts on this long player a story materializes through Delone’s very personal sound, telling the tale via his exquisite arrangements and rich expressiveness. It could be described as a polyhedral affair that changes with every listen and every playback. It is complex, delicate, and full of nuances, at the same time charged with a powerful and primitive energy.
