Psychic Emperor sees the unique pairing of Darrin Wiener (a.k.a. Plastiq Phantom) and singer Tristan McKay of the group Vells. The combination of Wiener's deft electronic sensibilities & savvy production and McKay's classic melodies and pop song structures has become an exciting new hybrid. Dance-oriented electronic rhythms of a soft and sexy nature intertwine with galactic organic sounds with solid drum breaks from drum-master Jeremiah Green (Modest Mouse) and eerily beautiful vocal lines combined with an eclectic array of instrumentation. This is bionic pop music, with antique pianos & organs, crunchy old synths and thick deep drum machines. Psychic Emperor is bound to please anyone with an ear for sweet melodies, sophisticated songwriting and a progressive approach towards record production. Beats and intricate harmonies swirl in and out of each other, and while the lyrics may get pensive and psychedelic, the songs always come across as spirited and upbeat.

Intergretron, the second full-length from the Vells, was written and
recorded over two years. Two years or two days, it makes no difference. Their
mesmerizing music is fashioned in a land without clocks and calendars. It is
evocative of mystical settings and myriad eras yet securely rooted in the here and
now by the immediacy of its intention and undeniable appeal.
Listen to the opening bars of "Precious Sweet," and the Vells' subtly
orchestrated charms are already audible: Gently crackling electronic textures
season acoustic guitars; the echo chamber-drums of Jeremiah Green pulsate beneath
Tristan Marcum's voice, an instrument on par with Marc Bolan and Ray Davies,
redolent of magic and androgyny . These are a dozen songs fashioned from
textures and hooks. The crisp cymbals and vapor-trail guitars of "Testify
Prestify" evoke memories of late '80s UK indie pop at its most romantic and
inventive, while a cover of the immortal "Silver Dagger" bristles with finger snaps
and spectral singing.

Formed in 2001, the Vells previously released a Phil Ek-produced eponymous
EP on Luckyhorse Industries (2002) and the debut album Flight From Echo Falls
(2005) on imputor?. The Washington-based band has shared bills with acts as
diverse the Shins, Divine Comedy, Spoon, Iron & Wine, the Decemberists, Black
Mountain, Tortoise, and Colin Blunstone and Ron Argent of the Zombies.
The band line-up on Integreton is Jeremiah Green (drums, guitar, amps,
vocals), Adam Howrey (bass), Tristan Marcum (vocals, organ, temple piano, guitar),
Tony Palmasani (guitar, mixer), and Mary Thinnes (piano, vibraphone,
synthesizer, vocals). Darrin Wiener, a k a plastiq phantom, serves as producer and
contributes Moog, "dust," and assorting programming tricks. Tom Peloso of
Modest Mouse plays fiddle on the jolly closer "Once Upon a Whirlpool." The
artwork was designed by fellow imputor? artist Nando Costa. The rest is
up to you.

 Rising from the ashes of the enigmatic San Diego post-rock troupe Physics at the beginning of 2000, Aspects of Physics exists as a continuation of existing ideas with the fusion of new thoughts on music.

Marginalized Information Forms is a set of 3 recordings / releases constructed over a two year span, divided by musical style, instrumentation and philosophical content. Ping, the first in the series, loosely illustrates the point of view of the observer (observer <- medium <- source) in relation to information using guitars, synthesizers, computers and other electronic devices, which combine into a variety of experimental yet melodic soundscapes. If Aspects of Physics were a humanoid with 3-way split personality disorder, Ping would represent the emotive, warm, and graceful side that would invite you over for a beer and some intellectually stimulating discussion about the state of the universe. In a couple of months you'll come to meet the other 2 personalities of AoP (MIF2 and MIF3 on different labels and therefore other cross-bred markets). For fans of Telefon Tel Aviv, Fridge, Four Tet, Mum, The Album Leaf, Stockhausen/Cage/Glass, and Warp Records.


Since you last saw Aspects of Physics, they've added Brent Asbury (Pinback, Thingy) on live drums and effects units, completed 3 west coast and 1 east coast tour(s) including multiple live internet performances (New York Underground Film Festival and MiniMax series conducted by William Duckworth), and invented/utilized web-based MIDI interfaces and software.

2 theremins:  the base track was composed on a plane from Seattle to LA using a toy PIano, Roland TR-606 & some nord lead samples.   When landed in LA, qp met up with two theremin players, and an upright bass player, and their parts were recorded in a few hours.

First 100 downloads are on US!!!   Portland band Yours isn't the Next Big Thing... yet. But listening to "Spin A Top," it isn't hard to imagine the day, very soon, when they are. Opening with a childlike chant that quickly snowballs into an indie rock anthem, the song's ringing guitars and ebullient vocals will have you airborne by the time "Top" reaches its stick-in-your-head chorus. On the flip side, "Ordinary Life" finds the duo of Matthan Minister and Adam Trachsel in a more reflective mood, exploring a stripped-down sound that underscores their stylistic range. More please!

Seattle resident William Collin Snively--better known to music fans as Diagram of Suburban Chaos-has done well as a professional composer and sound designer. Yet had that career not panned out, one suspects he might have made his mark as a physicist instead. Or maybe even a wizard. Because on the new full--length Ambit The Album (aka Taco 2), the music of DOSC often seems to defy laws of time and space. The electronic sounds at play are surprisingly tactile--check out the slowly splintering, celery-crisp beats and celestial harp strums of the opening title tune--and layered in a dynamic fashion that generates an ever-moving, three-dimensional realm of sound. Like the myriad cells in any living organism, different melodic ideas intermingle and work together, then drift apart; untroubled by obvious cliches of Western harmony, the five polychromatic instrumentals of Ambit The Album suspend time's forward progress. Fans of early Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss will find much to savor here.

Simultaneously stimulating and soothing, Ambit The Album is a captivating work of music.
