“Lost”, much like its predecessor “Into the Great Wide Yonder” (2010), serves not only as a logical continuation of his work, but also as yet another fuck-you to whatever genre you thought you had him boxed into. The Trentemøller sound is definitely left intact, yet as a whole it really doesn’t sound like anything he’s ever produced before. Few artists seem to possess that special talent of leaving the audience just as baffled as they are satisfied, but hey, that’s what’s great about Anders. He may alienate a few heads along the way, but it wouldn’t be interesting for him if he didn’t.

“Lost” boasts a dozen tracks with something of interest for anyone who’s ever been a fan of the Copenhagen based producer. You can’t really compare it to “The Last Resort”, but the club elements are there. It definitely isn’t “Into the Great Wide Yonder” either, even if it’s equally guitar driven. It’s as original as it is classic, mixing the tried and tested with all sorts of sonic surprises. And making it look easy in the process.

Differing from “Into The Great Wide Yonder”, which was a rather bold cinematic landscape, “Lost” is definitely a far more streamlined affair and way more “song structured”. It’s the kind of record one can only produce after endless months of studio isolation. Just where his creativity flourishes best.

That said Trentemøller has also found a new home – and it’s on stage with a band. “Lost” relays this epiphany in pitch perfect circumstances, finally merging the extrovert and introvert qualities the man has in his command.

Of course, none of his productions would be complete without those unique guest appearances, spanning a multitude of musical categories. They’re all given equal treatment when they’re dropped bang center into the middle of Trentemøller's very own musical universe, having to harness the potential of their talent on Trentemøller’s terms. It certainly isn’t that many folks who are capable of convincing Jonny Pierce (The Drums) or Sune Wagner (The Raveonettes) to appear on a club track and even fewer who are able to pull it off. Anders is in the top percentile of that lot. 

”I think it’s fun to take people out of their own musical comfort zone” he exclaimed to VICE earlier in the year when explaining his seemingly erratic choices. ”Actually, when I begun writing the songs, I had their voices in my mind all along. They just didn’t know it.”

Aside from Sune and Jonny, Trentemøller has managed to bring on board a whole rake of fantastic peers, personal influences and sprouting talent. Co-conspirators such as Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead), Jana Hunter (Lower Dens), Marie Fisker, Ghost Society and none other than the legendary slow-core pioneers Low are all to be found on the record.

That trademark haunting feeling that defined both ”The Last Resort” and ”Into the Great Wide Yonder” hasn’t been neglected on “Lost”. It’s just been redefined and made way more ferocious, the signature glitchy bass being replaced by sub woofer frequencies far more pounding. Almost punk rock. Instantly conjuring up thoughts of the more droning SUICIDE tracks or even contemporaries like The Soft Moon.

”Lost” documents an artist really hitting his stride. An intricate musical tapestry woven over countless sleepless nights in his Copenhagen studio. Nights invested in instrument experimentation and trashed analog consoles.

You can without a shadow of doubt call this release a genuine study in the art of attention to detail. No matter how many times you press play on this one you’re going to find something you missed the previous time around. Something that suddenly shines a whole new light on what you’re listening to.

Trentemøller’s recent album opus Lost already served as the logical continuation of his varied work and delivered his signature sound intact, yet it really didn’t sound like anything he’d ever produced before. Streamlined, song-structured and guitar-driven, Lost boasted a dozen tracks, each offering something of interest for anyone who has ever been a fan of the Copenhagen producer.

As original as it is classic, Lost mixed the tried-and-tested with all sorts of sonic surprises, merging the extrovert and introvert qualities the man has in his command. Also notable for being his most collaborative effort yet, Lost paired him with a vibrant and varied cast of guests - the legendary duo Low, Jonny Pierce from The Drums, Marie Fisker, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, Jana Hunter of Lower Dens, Ghost Society and Sune Wagner of The Raveonettes.

Now the new ‘Lost Reworks’ release gleefully rips up the rule book again, as Trentemøller is joined by some carefully-chosen conspirators - Toydrum (aka James Griffith and Pablo Clements of UNKLE), Jenny Wilson, T.O.M. And His Computer, Unkwon and Trentemøller - in dismantling the intricate musical tapestry of the album, recon-textualising the instrumental experimentation, the trashed analog consoles, and the entire sweep of influences, from krautrock to classical.

The original version of “River Of Life” abandons its throbbing guitars and soaring strings for dark and retro electroclash tones on Trentemøller’s own remix, and introspective, electro-gaze in the hands of T.O.M. And His Computer. “Come Undone” stalked at a slow and measured pace, and Trentemøller’s steamy new version recalls vintage Goldfrapp in marrying sultry vocals and seductive machine music, while Toydrum beefs up the raw, spiky electro rock elements. The melancholic pop beauty of “Candy Tongue” is remade with ghostly atmospherics and evocative, exotic instrumentation via Jenny Wilson’s version, and while one remix of “Deceive” made its debut in a stunning EP package from earlier this year - Unkwon’s misty, dusty broken beat version - it is counterbalanced by Trentemøller’s own glitchy, cinematic Lost & Found Remix.

For the digital version of Lost Reworks, even more treats abound: Trentemøller’s extended, frisky Club Mix of “Deceive” which turns up the pressure on the beat and the bass; re-arranged melodies and a hypnotic build on Pinkunoizu’s “Gravity” remix, and a stripped-back instrumental version of Toydrum “Come Undone” rework.

Cosmo Vitelli's label I'M A CLICHÉ might have run pretty low-key to the eyes of some but during its 12 years of activity, it managed to display a very clear artistic direction strong of 70 releases with a much enviable sonic cohesion while have a fine nose for talent: among other proud achievements, the label hatched the career of Israeli super-duo Red Axes and released Azari & III's "Hungry For The Power" 6 months before it became a worldwide classic.
A dozen years during which the label's tastes bended more and more towards a very peculiar type of synth pop and synth wave, too.

This year will see the release of a few retrospective compilations, each exploring the main traits and moods of its vast catalog.
The first one, "10 TRACKS THAT MIGHT HELP YOU FOR COOKING BUT WOULD CLEAR THE DANCEFLOOR" is obviously not touching I'M A CLICHÉ's arsenal of club weapons.
It's fair to say most of the music here either displays a feel of in-betweenness, or menace and tension—not unlike preparation scenes from a heist movie.

Cosmo Vitelli rounded up a selection spanning over the last decade, from UNCLE O's skeletal beats to ETIENNE JAUMET's modular synth jam, from ENTERTAINMENT's droning melodies and warehouse-reverberating drums to DIRTY 30's (actually Alixander III from Azari & III) twisted jazz-funk-leaning disco, the misty psychedelia of RED AXES' "Dreams Like A Tale". 

It's also a look back at COSMO VITELLI's own discography, through his 2006 single "Delayer" here remixed by Quiet Village over 10 minutes and two tracks from his band BOT'OX' second album (2013), all linked by the idea that escapism can somehow be a modern affair too. Here and now.
