The debut album of Mári Mákó, Oudemian, fuses introspective instrumental and vocal textures with live electronics. It is a sonic journey of finding inner strength through crisis, of overcoming existential angst and rebirth.

The title was invented as a combination of two-words: "Ouroboros" and "Demian." Ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a snake biting its own tail representing the circle of life, and Hesse's novel Demian depicts a young boy struggling to find his new self-knowledge and his place in an immoral world. As it happens, Oudemian also holds an actual meaning in ancient Greek: "none."

The meeting of these concepts drive the narrative and musical evolution of the album, which moves from a place of fragility and mystery and arriving at a place of reflection.

(2017) - for Laptops, Smartphones or any devices that can stream a video with sound from the internet 

This is an adaptation of an audiovisual piece that changes with each performance. The original piece can be performed by anyone and experienced in many different ways. 

In its original form Layers comprises of six videos (each titled Layer 1 till 6 respectively), which I made and uploaded online. Playing layers 1 - 6 synchronously, and ideally on 6 different devices, creates an audio-visual piece of undefined length. You can start any of the videos at any moment, and they can align with each other at any moment. Each time you listen to and view the piece, it sounds and looks slightly different, creating an ever-changing yet static installation-esque work.

Sticking to the band’s grotty beginnings and love for stripped down minimalist riffs, emaciated dreamy clouds of sound, and a desire for a musical output that is catchy, grooving, yet challenging, “and now that we are here” is a labour of love, created in complicated and stressful conditions, with an intense liveliness and passion. The songs were developed over the better part of a year, constantly being rehearsed, performed and slightly altered, and culminating in a careful balance of nuanced structures, whilst also keeping space for spattering of controlled improvisation.  

The album was recorded live in a single day by Edvards Broders, who put up with them through the long mixing process. The only overdubs were the vocals that were recorded at the end of the day’s session. The album was re-mastered by Giorgos Kravvaritis, and is now out as a co-release with Polyscope, available to buy and listen to digitally and on CD. The album’s artwork is adorned with photos of a beautiful installation artwork by Taisuke Koyama and Takashi Kawashima that was shown at the Hague’s LhGWR gallery.

i feel tired

A live performance with Rothko's painting was organised by Stedelijk Museum when the quarantine was announced in the Netherlands and it had to be cancelled. However it shouldn't stop creation and a music piece was composed but from a different concept. In solitude while composing I realised that piece should be about feeling longing, but not in a defeated way. More like feeling the pause and delay, what we
actually experience in our everyday life during the quarantine. Even though we are not sharing space with the art it still exists out there, and there is a hope to connect after all.
I still made use of the melody line, which I’d created during my time with the painting in the museum. Also there is another factor which was very important for this project; the legacy of Morton Feldman, the American composer who had already composed pieces for Rothko’s art and I refer to that whit a short segment in the final piece.

In Bloom is a new concert series hosted by Korzo Theatre and curated by Hague-based composer/performers James Alexandropoulos-McEwan and Lise Morrison. They select and present a showcase of young musicians and projects that haven’t yet broken to the surface. These are works developed by their peers and collaborators working in the local music and art scene - be it in the context of local squat-based and D.I.Y. concerts, or projects born from Dutch music and art academies.
