Part two finds the main character of our story shortly after leaping from the train (see Part 1 - Leaping). Immediately, they are overcome with a sense of self-sufficiency and contrive grand goals to become successful in making their way in the world in spite of their lack of knowledge or experience of how anything works beyond the confines of where they began. They discover a town filled with people like them who have long ago jumped from the very same train and formed a society. However, they all operate according to a strict system to establish order. It becomes clear that no one is just going to hand the newcomer everything they could ever want. This drives them to become rebellious and bitter as they seek some sort of escape from this system.
