The final volume of the Pulsar.scramble series. All tracks are composed using pulsar synthesis, an advanced form of particle synthesis used to generate trains of sonic particles. Its output ranges from singular impulses and sequences to continuous tones across multiple perceptual timescales. 

Most of the material presented in this series uses the New Pulsar Generator (nuPg) software designed by Marcin Pietruszewski.

Hilary Jeffery’s Murmansk Spaceport was an environment designed for exploring unknown territories. During November 2015 musicians from Murmansk(RU) and Bodø (NO) in the Barents Region worked together with Hilary Jeffery to perform Murmansk Spaceport. A port is a place of departure and arrival, of temporary transactions and unstable conditions. Murmansk Spaceport encouraged the musicians to travel imaginatively into areas they do not know, to explore dark territories of which they have little or no experience.

For Hilary Jeffery this meant exploring the atmosphere and mood of Murmansk in November, which for him was unusually dark. Additionally, he attempted to enter into the sound of Russian, a language unknown and new to him. In a similar way each musician was asked to explore areas in which they are non-expert, to literally enter the dark and unknown. With music as a central focus, various means were used for navigation, including solo and group improvisations, introspective language explorations, sound and image recording, associative writing and map making.

I used Ableton's Operator synth's white noise and sine wave in A3 (220Hz in frequency) pitch to test and calibrate the spatialization of the 5.1 speaker setup in the project space of MACA during my residency there, building up for "Latent amongst the Air", a project commissioned by Sonic Acts Festival. Because of the unusual shape and structures of the space, I had to figure out some way to measure its acoustics + unconventional placement of the 5.1 speakers setup I was using.

But then a fun idea occurred to me to amplify(or abuse?) the project space's acoustic characteristics and spatiality furthermore with a waveform that is a bit more complex(sawtooth wave) and hence suspected that this would yield interesting aliasings and excite certain partials, creating "ghost melodies" of the space... 
In fact, when the project was under "installation mode" prior to the performance, this is what was being looped.

On Sunday afternoon 29-05-22 before the last round of performances, with help of Anne, I decided to record some improvisation with the space in this manner.
So here it goes, tuning of a space, which are latent melodies from partials of the pedal tone of A3 in SAW64 wave recapitulated by the project space of MACA while it's circulating around the room through the 5 speakers at the rate of 0.09 Hz speed. What's being stacked on top of A3 pitch as chords are some impromptu counterpoints on top to introduce some nice interference just for fun. Slight attenuation and phasing of the composition were probably also a contribution of Anne who was walking around and exploring the space with the recording device in place of my two feet and ears that were bounded by the hands playing keys behind the laptop...

Inconsolable Ghost is an occult audio-visual group produced by Hilary Jeffery and Gideon Kiers, former members of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation. Conjuring up a twenty-first century vision of spiritism and occupying a similarly spooky territory as Kilimanjaro / Fuji, this project works with several well known artists who are conceived as channellers of energies, atmospheres, ghosts, spirits, thought forms and other entities. 

Inconsolable Ghost shows are deeply atmospheric channelling events, as anyone who witnessed the early Inconsolable Ghost concerts can testify to. The first channelling took place at OT301 – the old film academy in Amsterdam – there followed two Central European tours in 2014 and 2015 which brought the group to Vienna, Bratislava, Topolcany, Budapest, Ostrava and Zagreb. These tours featured collaborations with the Japanese filmmaker Makino Takashi, the Hungarian viola player Zsolt Sőrés Ahad, the Berlin duo Hacklander \ Hatam and the Australian cellist Anthea Caddy.

The most recent channelling took place at a very haunted cinema in Singpaore on 12 December 2019...
