Belgian artist Milo Spykers is first out of the traps for 2022, with his ‚Hier & Nu’ EP (complete with a remix from Fengler) delivering a four-track punch of modern techno. Spyker’s use of dense synths across the EP imbue his tracks with a memorable character that leaps out of the speakers. 

From the jagged and oppressive leads of ‘Hier & Nu’ to the outright anthemic riffs of ‘The Helicity’ via the cascading stabs of ‘Happex’, the ‚Hier & Nu’ EP is a boisterous work of controlled chaos. Fengler’s remix of ‘Hier & Nu’ extracts Spyker's synths, and with clinical precision, reconstructs them around a lean, muscular rhythm track that oozes tension.

Featured on Fengler´s ‘Berghain 05‘ mix, ‘Sphinx‘ takes a straighter path into the kind of sensory techno that Marcel is well known for presenting on the Berghain floor. Funky, playfully aggressive, heavily defined and certainly cosmic, a concerto of outer-space tones, static and filtered waves join the racing percussion in tense unison.

Echoplex, who graced IMF002, also returns with a suitably trippy and percussive number, entitled 'The Relapse'. Building into a bleepy, freaky, acidic killer, complete with some cleverly deployed rave-vocal samples, filtering in and out of the fluffy aesthetic, the long-serving Polish master is still on top form.

After his wonderful 4-tracker on IMF003 promising talent Thomas Hessler continues his run with the melodic and stark journey track, 'The Escaper'. What is initially shrouded in mystery and melancholy soon opens up into a funky, US vs. UK-styled workout, snapping snares and reduced percussion driving the meandering synth theme.

Her debut EP crystalises 20 years of devotion to techno, presenting a broad palette of sonic influences formed since her early days as a raver in Antwerp. At the same time, it continues the label’s philosophy of pairing a next generation artist with respected heads of the genre, with long-time Swedish producer Hertz and STEYA’s hero Rolando featuring on her ‘Dopamine EP’. 

Swedish producer Hertz – a favourite of STEYA’s (“I’ve played one of his tracks in every set since the beginning of my career”) joins the project to re-work the title track, upping the energy of the original.

Her debut EP crystalises 20 years of devotion to techno, presenting a broad palette of sonic influences formed since her early days as a raver in Antwerp. At the same time, it continues the label’s philosophy of pairing a next generation artist with respected heads of the genre, with long-time Swedish producer Hertz and STEYA’s hero Rolando featuring on her ‘Dopamine EP’. Growing up in Belgium where the ‘Knights of the Jaguar’ was a staple childhood anthem, it was “one of her biggest wishes to have him (Rolando) as a remixer”.

An EP borne through two years of dedicated studio time, ‘Dopamine EP’ kicks off with the electric title track, a gritty tribal outing marked by dynamic shifts in tempo throughout. ‘Fast Life’ is a slick bass-led cut with plenty of bottom-end kick before a punchy synth melody gets added to the brew. Swedish producer Hertz – a favourite of STEYA’s (“I’ve played one of his tracks in every set since the beginning of my career”) joins the project to re-work the title track, upping the energy of the original. ‘Things You Never Said’ begins life centred around energetic rolling grooves, before warm synth rushes give it a distinct Motor City vibe. Rolando fittingly steps up for remix duties to close out the EP, delivering a masterclass in deep simmering techno, extending the original by two minutes.

Berlin-based DJ vrov who has a famously raw sound that has taken him to labels like Abstraction and Khazad Records as well as this one before now. Opening up is STEYA, the rising Belgian talent who dropped her debut solo EP to great acclaim on this label in the summer. She links with multidisciplinary Dutch-Turkish artist OGUZ whose refined sounds roam across the techno spectrum and take him to clubs and festivals worldwide. Their excellent '4 AM Lullaby' is a heavy techno thumper with smeared dub chords rippling out to infinity as the tight percussive loops drive things onwards with great force.

Few artists do hard groove and tribal techno like Swiss-born Audioklinik, another veteran who has been shaping the underground since the '90s with countless chart-topping tracks and important DJ residencies. His enthralling 'Serendipity' skates along the surface with shimmering percussive patterns and flat, forceful kicks. Tripped-out motifs up top provide wild hooks as this tribal wall of techno sweeps up everything in its path.

The IMF label closes out a superb 2024 with another vital collection of essential techno sounds curated by founder Marcel Fengler. HARDPROOF VA 07 once again follows its vision, bringing together the techno stars of tomorrow with some of the genre's most consistently innovative pioneers. Frankfurt mainstay Michael Klein is next and brings a lifetime's experience of the city's legendary clubs which colour his sounds next to a love of straightforward and dubby rhythms. 'Hot Pot Smell' is big, muscular techno with raved-up piano stabs and a pulsing bassline. Chopped vocal fragments and oversized hi-hats all add to the irresistible sense of motion.

The IMF label closes out a superb 2024 with another vital collection of essential techno sounds curated by founder Marcel Fengler. HARDPROOF VA 07 once again follows its vision, bringing together the techno stars of tomorrow with some of the genre's most consistently innovative pioneers. Felicie is shaping modern techno on many different fronts: the Amsterdam-based Frenchwoman has hosted her own Fastgroove Klub project at Rex Club and dropped her hugely intense signature sounds on the likes of Exhale and Mord. Her fantastic 'Komodo' rides on dubbed-out drum loops with scruffy kicks and mind-melting percussive patterns adding to the intensity. It's fast but nuanced and packed with deft designs.

Four Four Premiere: Felicie - Komodo [Index Marcel Fengler]

Index Marcel Fengler unearths another Berlin-forged gem with a debut release for Somewhen. Following an impressive pair of EPs on his own Sana imprint, label boss Marcel Fengler was quick to invite the newcomer to the IMF family. Following a pair of head turning performances on line-ups alongside Fengler at his Berghain home, the time has come for IMF 05 to bring Somewhen’s talents to wider attention 

A-side cut ‘Dain’ is a stripped down techno trip engineered for dancefloors at dawn: a siren call to the club’s most battle hardened heads, its subtle machinations will prove deadly in the right DJ’s hands. Over on the B-side, ‘Aula’ is the EP’s more unpredictable beast, its rougher rave edges rounded off by a rich bass synth and enigmatic vox pads that give the track an unsettling air as it nears its conclusion. XJ closes the EP with an insistent slice of acid with Somewhen’s own playful modern twist.

Munich’s Zenker Brothers arrive on Index Marcel Fengler for the first time with Pollioni, a four-track EP that captures the unique style that has brought the duo acclaim over a string of releases for Tresor and their own Ilian Tape label since they combined their considerable production talents as a dual force in dextrous, charismatic techno. 

Each of Pollioni’s tracks eschew the standard four-four in favour of insistent beat patterns that service a maelstrom of rave era-indebted synths and tumescent basslines, working themselves into grooves with their own personality and once again showing the Zenker ability to forge techno that rises above the standard DJ tool style into something more characterful and lasting.

'Night Hustler' opens the A-side with a swinging, low-end-heavy groove that opens up for a sinister melody in the its second half. It's followed by 'Bias', which builds rolling tribalistic drums around a slowly rising degraded synth line. B1 'Karma Lounge' mines similar territory in the duo's collaboration with Ilian Tape colleague Philipp Von Bergmann, before 'Neunkeu' closes the EP by establishing its place in the continuum with its hardcore stabs and a sci-fi acid backbone.

Part 2 focuses on the warmer and more soulful side of IMF. Highlighting this section of the project is the first AZUR track – Marcel’s new side project. He explains: “I’ve always liked to be diverse with my music, but I also don’t want to confuse people. This is the reason why I decided to give my melodic and groovy side its own identity. My music under the Marcel Fengler name will go back to its roots and be more raw and rough in production terms.”

Elsewhere the compilation features an outstanding array of artists making their debut for the label, all of which have a strong personal meaning to Fengler. There’s FJAAK, the exciting Berlin trio he admires for their authentic identity and honest sound, a special Shed remix of the enigmatic VRIL whose timeless productions continue to strike a chord with him, good friend Eric Cloutier who he has long wanted to get involved in IMF and of course long-time label champion Thomas Hessler. Vienna’s Arthur Robert – a new face Marcel discovered after he sent him tracks over Facebook – contributes a beautiful shimmering work to the compilation.

The final digital package will be complemented by a DJ mix from Thomas Hessler comprised of tracks from IMF10.

After a string of releases for his up to now permanent address Ostgut Ton with Luke Slater’s Mote-Evolver imprint being an exception to the rule, Marcel Fengler establishes his own label to expand his capacity and give a platform also for talented producers or interesting collabos.
