Tanisha Bakker-Honeyman is one of twenty four excited Indigenous students received the news this month that they will be even closer to completing their chosen tertiary qualifications. The students have been announced as the recipients of the Mary MacKillop Foundation’s Indigenous Tertiary Scholarship.
The Mary MacKillop Foundation scholarship provides financial assistance and ongoing mentoring to students. Indigenous students experience many barriers to learning and we believe it is the mentoring that makes our program so successful.

Queensland’s Brendan Doggett has been named the Lord’s Taverners Indigenous Cricketer of the Year as Cricket Australia’s State Cricket Awards were announced today.
The right arm fast bowler from Toowoomba was the Brisbane Heat’s community rookie last season and became a consistent member of Queensland’s Futures League team, claiming eight wickets at an average of 23.13.
 
He also took 42 wickets at average of 13 in stellar season of Queensland grade cricket for Western Suburbs.
Further adding to his standout season, Doggett was part of the National Indigenous Squad that played the National Performance Squad during a tour of the Bupa National Cricket Centre last May, claiming five wickets.

The Torres Strait Regional Authority Chair Joseph Elu talks about Coral Bleaching and how it  can leave corals susceptible to coral diseases and if it lasts long enough cause their eventual death. Higher water temperatures have also been found to improve the survivorship of the coral eating crown of thorns starfish.
Healthy coral reefs are vital to the Torres Strait Islanders way of life.

TSRA Joseph Elu on Coral Bleaching

Associate Prof. Gail Garvey spoke to "Talking Point" about the World Indigenous Cancer Conference.
WICC 2016 will provide opportunities to foster new collaboration, enhance capacity, and share knowledge and information about cancer and Indigenous people internationally.

The aim is to reduce Indigenous cancer disparities. We will achieve this by bringing together Indigenous communities and experts working in a variety of disciplines to discuss the latest findings in the field and to stimulate the development of international collaborations and encourage high quality cancer research. Delegates from around the world and Australia spoke to Indigistream.com.au about their thoughts on the conference and what experiences they will take back to their communities.

Thaylia is of Greek/Aboriginal heritage and at 23 she discovered her passion for music and picked up an instrument for the very first time. However due to her struggle with addiction it wouldn’t be until a decade later that her true journey in music would begin. She got sober, quit her high paying corporate job, sold her house and car and moved to Sydney to pursue her musical passions full time. 

Now fulfilling a lifelong dream at the Australian Institute of Music, she is completing a Bachelor of Music with a major in Composition and Music Production. But although music is a part of who she is it does not define her life. Her journey first and foremost is to find all the buried and broken bits in her soul and heal. She loves astronomy and is fascinated by the galaxies, and has a deep interest in learning about the truth of the universe, the human soul and how it functions.
