i, being born a woman and distressed for piano and electronics is named after Edna St. Vincent Millay’s sonnet of the same name. The piece describes the inner turmoil I’ve experienced as someone who was born a woman yet experiences dysphoria around being such. It also discusses the various prejudices I’ve encountered as a woman-presenting person and the never-ending struggle to be heard.

Like most winters, it is a winter without snow. 
I am wound too tight for you to work through. 
Murder fictionalized on the television. You split me open. 
My bra de-harnessed—I have not been naked 
in front of anyone in a long time. You cook for me. 
We eat lentils. It does not warm me from the inside 
the way I hoped. I do not lick the bowl clean. 
Maybe I should have—shivering, one more note 
in the cold air ringing without sound. We had to 
make our own heat. Sweat like invisible ink, cooling 
too soon—the black light aglow at the small 
of my back—you write in my mouth— 
All winters are not the same winter. 
I will remember this as divorced from myself, 
watching us from above our bodies. 
It is December. I have lived half your life. 
Have I lived it better than you? 
Is there such a thing?

Program Notes:

In memory of Isabella Proe. Inspired by her poem “No Past Should Be the Present,” free the black birds tells a story of the internal struggle between trying to move forward and healing from past trauma. Bella struggled with mental illness until her death, repeatedly fighting for her voice to be heard. This piece is meant to bring life to her words, for those who have struggled and those who are struggling.

an ode to the developing tubist

Indigo Knecht is a composer, tubist, and educator fascinated with the challenges people face as they navigate this world. Through a synthesis of contemporary classical music and rock & roll, Indigo explores themes such as environmentalism, mental illness, and self-realization.

Indigo has a BM in Composition from Bowling Green State University and a MM in Composition from University of Michigan. They are currently in their fourth year at University of Miami pursuing a DMA in Composition under the guidance of Dr. Juan Chattah. Their multimedia installation, “The Chanting of Coral Reefs: Bringing Awareness to the Endangerment of Coral Reefs Through the Sonification of Settling Larvae,” received the 2024 Presser Foundation Graduate Award. Indigo currently teaches music theory and composition at Tennessee Technological University while they continue to develop expansive compositions that bring awareness to issues in our world with groundbreaking technology.
