The smoke that screens the air,
the grass that’s never there.

And if I could see a single bird, what a joy.
I try to write some words and create
a simple song to be heard
by the rest of the world.

I live in this land called Paraiso,
in a house made of cardboard floors and walls.
I learned to be free in Paraiso,
free to claim anything I see.
Matching rags for my clothes,
plastic bags for the cold.

And if empty cans were all I have, what a joy.
I never fight to take someone
else’s coins and live with fear
like the rest of the boys.

Paraiso

The exact words of the last poem written by Jose Rizal to the Philippines before he was executed by the Spaniards. Put into music and performed at the CCP on June 17, 2011 in celebration of Rizal's Birth Sesquicentennial. 

This was performed by the 150-voice choir conducted by Jai Sabas Aracama and music performed by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Olivier Ochanine. 

The Rizal narration in the first part was done by Filipino actor John Arcilla.

Composed by Jed Balsamo, with libretto by Paul Alexander Morales, "Halik" (The Kiss) depicts the sad departing of Rizal's Noli Me Tangere protagonist Crisostomo Ibarra from his love Maria Clara as the former leaves in haste being chased by the Spanish authorities for crimes of rebellion he did not commit. As the two share their last kiss in the middle of the night, the two would eventually reveal their secrets to each other, and with their forced parting, reveal the lingering pain that would fuel Ibarra's revenge. 

Featuring: Marlon Galang (oboe), Adolfo Mendoza (basoon), Dino Decena (violin), Herrick Ortiz (cello) and Jed Balsamo (piano).

The song was originally written by Jimmy Webb and performed by the band America for the movie, The Last Unicorn (1982).
