I Love Mama

traditional song from Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. based on transcription by Iwan Paul. i recorded this 2 guitar version for a documentary movie by Miles Films called Pesan dari Samudra. it will be released soon at local tv station.

Sabu adalah pulau kecil yang tertetak di tengah Laut Sawu tepat di antara pulau Sumba dan Timor. Pulau ni cukup tandus. Satu-satunya tanaman yang dapat tumbuh dengan subur adalah lontar. Pohon lontar di Sabu tumbuh secara liar dan segala bagian pohon ini digunakan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidup masyarakat Sabu dari daun, buah, batang hingga akarnya. Sasando adalah instrumen musik yang resonatornya terbuat dan daun lontar dengan bentuk setengah bola yang indah. Sumber bunyinya diletakkan di tengah resonator itu berupa tabung bambu yang secara melingkar diberi dawai. Di Sabu sasando ini dimainkan secara duet dengan melodi yang saling mengisi mengiringi nyanyian vokal. Musik ini digunakan dalam peristiwa sosial apa saja: pemikahan, kematian, kelahiran bayi, pesta-pesta, bahkan sekarang juga untuk ibadah di gereja. Di pulau Rote juga terdapat musik sasando tetapi biasanya dimainkan tunggal diiringi tambourin kecil.
