When we arrived at Jaam Rek* late one Saturday night this past February, we did not intend to record a live album. We had already played a full show at a different club earlier in the evening. We were exhausted from the start and it was a surprise to see our good friend Steve Kennedy-Williams setting up recording mics on stage. In many ways it was not an ideal situation--rushed from the previous gig, hungry, tired and sick of loading gear from one place to the next...but as has happened many times before, from the first moment of the inaugural drumroll, we secured our connection with the crowd and set off to delightfully exhaust every last ounce of power in our beings.

This isn't the cleanest or prettiest performance we've ever done. In fact, there is little to distinguish it from many of our favorite shows, but that's kind of the point. This is us, getting dirty, for you. And we hope you enjoy it.

Ten years after Seattle-based DIY jazz sensation Industrial Revelation came swinging into being, the powerful combo of D’Vonne Lewis, Evan Flory-Barnes, Ahamefule J. Oluo, and Josh Rawlings have delivered their most realized document to date: Liberation & the Kingdom of Nri. A couple ideas that had been gestating turned into unexpectedly tight demos turned into the unexpected tumbling-out of a pile of their best work to date—just as a year-long swell in the group’s profile (taking The Stranger’s 2014 Genius Award for music, for one) saw the quartet playing and wordlessly communicating on a new level. A humble, understated grandeur is a quality they all share, a commitment to exploration, not of some nebulous outer limits, but inner depths most shy from and deny. It’s the literal unearthing of those depths’ bounty that even inspired the album name. The centuries-ahead-of-their time bronze artifacts found in Igbo-Ukwu (a region of what’s now Nigeria) by accident in the first half of the 20th century were made with such advanced techniques that European (and Eurocentric) historians refused to believe they could in fact be the work of the Nri, a thousand-year-old nation unique in history in that they grew not by war, but by voluntary allegiance—including rejects and ex-slaves. This was recorded in 2011 by Brian Engeness Live at Eastside Club Tavern in Olympia, WA. The Eastside is our favorite venue on the planet because of it's wonderful staff, amazing patrons and absolute dedication to presenting the best music they can. In return for all the venue gives us, we do everything within our physical limitations to give them the best show we can. Play so hard you feel like you're going to die, enjoy.
