These tracks are not meant for home listening, but any DJ worth their salt will recognize their immediate power: every last drop of impact and effect has been squeezed from each element, every new hi-hat or hand percussion heightens the intensity of the loop. The tracks are the opposite of progressive; they seem content to stay where they are and placidly explore the grooves’ every crevice and nook.

IM121 - OMAAR - Neo Form

Sin Afuera (“Without Outside”) is the new collaborative EP from Chilean producer @Imaabs, label manager of NAAFI and cofounder of Máquina Simple, and @OtherIslands, a vocalist and producer from London’s underground club scene. Both based in Mexico City, the two artists share a close creative partnership shaped by a mutual interest in exploring the limits of global electronic music.

The EP’s title refers to the myth of closed systems—those that define themselves by casting an outside as dissident, migrant, or simply noise, and enforcing its exclusion. Through hybridity, dissonance, and distortion, the record traces the contours of this outside, imagining other ways of being in the world.

Released via NAAFI, the four tracks draw on and destabilize the rhythmic logics of dembow, baile funk, grime, dancehall, reggaeton, and jungle. Frenetic percussion and glistening synths meet expansive sound design: ASMR flickers, field recordings, and fragments of unintelligible speech bleed through swung grooves and shimmering textures. The result is a sound that is luminous and tense, shot through with longing and evoking a space that feels at once intimate and yet out of reach.

Was it just me or OMAAR's 'Progressive Tribes' was one of the standout tracks of the previous decade? Fusing the raw intensity of hard drum with Mexican producer's percussive finesse, it certainly hit all the right notes to be a DJs' favourite club tool. Years went by and OMAAR kept on delivering the rumbling goodies, regularly enriching the catalogue of NAAFI with his trademark sound.  Now, he turns to Infinite Machine for his latest release which sees the usual relentless drum workouts mix with elements of jungle, uk funky and hard drum.

Fake Rust is a three track EP that weaves together Middle Eastern instruments, Latin influences, and hints of tribal rhythm.

The title Fake Rust came from a trip I took with artist and dear friend Jacqueline L. Palma and her daughter to the desert in Coahuila. There, we scanned stones covered in lichen. At first glance, the textures looked like rust, but in truth they were alive, quietly transforming the surface of the rocks. That illusion stayed with me: something appearing aged or corroded, but actually vibrant and breathing.

This EP carries that same paradox (raw, percussive, and earthy), yet built for movement, connection, and energy. Fake Rust is a reminder that what looks like decay can instead be growth, and that the dancefloor, like the desert, is full of hidden life.
